Answering Muslims: ABC's Islam Deception: Are Men and Women Equal in Islam?

David Wood continues his response to the ABC News show about Islam. One of the assertions is that Islam teaches that men and women are equal. Really? Let's examine that.

  1. Seems like asking "what does Islam teach about X" is the same as asking "what does Christianity teach about X". I'm no defender of Islam, but your question is too broad.

The treatment of women is a good example to illustrate this. Paul says some pretty terrible things about women (not to mention the OT) and there are Christian sects that do oppress women. Does that mean the blanket statement "Christianity teaches women are not equal" is valid? No.

I think you'd be more accurate to say what does the Qu'ran teach about women or what do Muslims in x country/sect believe about women.

  2. You're wrong, what the Quran says IS Islam. It cannot be seperated. Any Muslim will agree that it is impossible to be a Muslim without accepting the Quran as the word of Allah. Really if the Quran says something, the matter is settled in Islam, and to state otherwise is heresy.

Neither is it possible to be a Christian without accepting the Bible. And I don't recall any 'terrible' statements about women in either the Old or New Testament. In fact, Paul explicitly states that for God, there is no difference between men and women.
And yes, if the Bible had said that men and women are unequal, then this DOES mean that Christianity teaches it.

  3. That is the point: the Bible does not say men and women are unequal. The Qur'an does.

  4. Anonymous, I know a group of American and British muslims who would disagree with your assertion. Also, all but one of the christians I know let their women speak in church.

  5. Ryan, I'm not surprise that that anonymous comment is over your head. You don't hold the Bible as the final authority of what Christianity is so of course you can't see the Qur'an as the final authority of what Islam is. The groups of Muslims who disagree don't take the Qur'an as final authority. The Qur'an is clear. The Bible is clear.

  6. The bible may be "clear", but no other christians disagree with you on what that clarity is? No other christians don't hold to sola scripta?

I think you made my point for me.
