Three Problems of Evil by Peter S. Williams - Apologetics 315

Brian Auten posted a great lecture by Peter Williams on the "Problem of Evil". I think he answered it pretty well. There is no single answer. I think the evidential and prepositional approach are both necessary.

  1. The lamp post story is a good analogy for one who would like to presuppose the supernatural, but it misses something critical, one is not warranted to make claims or judgments about the area beyond the lamp’s light.

  2. No one is saying that one should make claims or judgments about the area outside the lamp's light any more than one is warranted to assume that there is nothing beyond the lamp's light. Paul talked about this in Acts 17. Specifically we ought to "grope about" in the dark looking for God. You should keep groping.

  3. 1) All theists make claims and judgements about what's beyond the lamp's light.

    2) The universe may or may not actually be analogous to a lamp's light. It's unknown and perhaps unknowable.

  4. 1) All atheists make claims and judgments about what's beyond the lamp's light.

    2) Knowledge of God is analogous to a lamp's light. It's known and very much knowable.

  5. Not all, just what are known as "hard" or "Strong" atheist.

Knowledge of God is analogous to a lamp's light.

You apparently badly misunderstood the analogy.

  6. Nice play with semantics. You once defined "Christian" as anyone who claimed to be a Christian. Why should I allow you to change the historical definition of "Atheism" - belief that there is no God?

And "light" is used as a direct analogy to the knowledge of God's existence. Remember Romans 1. Maybe you should go back and read it and this time it will actually take root and you will understand it.

  7. You once defined "Christian" as anyone who claimed to be a Christian.

Still do, I am however aware that there are preterist, amillennialist, postmillennialist, calvinists, arminians, catholics, cafateria catholics, greek orthodox, amish, etc... etc... etc...

And the light is refering to naturalism. Did you even listen to the talk you posted? Reading back over your "analysis" of it, there's actually no firm indication you did.

You'll note the word "atheist" appears in the various versions of atheism.

  8. Ryan, I can discuss the lecture in as much or less detail as I want. It's my blog.

The light doesn't just refer to Naturalism. IT refers to what you know and to what you can observe - the evidence that you have.

All of the Christian denominations you mentioned all fundamentally agree on the essentials that make one a Christian. Therefore your understanding of what being a Christian means is wrong.

Just like calling yourself "atheist" doesn't mean much if you can define it anyway you want...so is the same for everything.

  9. Clearly "light" can represent other things in other analogies, but in the analogy in the talk you posted, it represented something specific. It's ok you didn't listen to it, not worries.

  10. Who says I can't expand the analogy? Believe what ever you want, given you do that anyway.

  11. Well of course you can, but then it's not the analogy I originally brought up.

Also, your "expansion" is silly and nonsensical in light of the original analogy, but this is a dumb thing to argue about so have a good night.

  12. Paul made the same "expansion". It's also not outside of what Peter Williams was talking about. Just because you can't get around it is no reason to "poo poo" it.

  13. I care not what Paul said, and like what I said before, have a good night.

  15. May the Force be with you, for always.

  16. I could make all kinds of humorous
Star Wars references and although it's hard not to, it is not what you need. You need the love of God to break up your hard heart so you can truly see Him and know He is there with you always. I'll bed praying that God blesses you with Himself.
