Not sure how this doesn't equally apply to the Hebrew Bible (Isaiah 40:22 and 44:24-28*, 1st Samuel 2:8, Proverbs 8:27 and Luke 4:5). Sure, you can cite Job 26, but that just demonstrates that it's a hodge podge mess.
*probably the inspiration for the very Koranic verse in question.
Most Christians and Jews are not trying to argue that those verses are to be taken as more than figuratively and not saying that we should believe that the earth is flat because the Bible says it does. However, some Muslims are saying so on the basis of their understanding of the Koran.
I should be clearer. I'm not saying that each of those examples should be understood figuratively. I mean that the only way you could think it's teaching that the earth is flat is that you don't understand what it means.
No, you couldn't be more wrong (well, you always do surprise me), ANE cosmology is well understood from a host of sources and the biblical domed sky/flat earth is no more accurate than the Koranic version, and shares much with it.

The Bible does not teach that the earth is flat.
ReplyDeleteIn a lot of places it does. In others it doesn't. It's a mess.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so.
