Dr Michael  Brown debated Bart Ehrman a couple of weeks ago on whether or not the Bible adequately explains why people suffer. On his Line of Fire  broadcast, Dr. Brown attempts to further the discussion. It's real interesting! My only complaint is that I disagree what Job challenged God and accused him of doing anything wrong. I see it as Job strongly questioning. what is happening to him and not trying to hold God accountable.  This was a great a program!

Apologetics 315: Antony Flew Interview Videos by Lee Strobel (w/ MP3)

Brian Auten has posted Lee Strobel's interviews with the late Anthony Flew. He was a life-long atheist who gave up atheism after a career of denying God. As far as I know Dr Flew did not become a Christian but he gave up atheism and was moved by the weight of the evidence to believe that there is a God who created the universe. What follows is my Brian's post along with the embedded videos.

Here is an interview by Lee Strobel of the late Antony Flew, not too long after his rejection of atheism. Video clips in five parts at LeeStrobel.com:

Why did your beliefs change? (2:06)

What is God like? (5:08)

A Creator was involved in the creation of life (2:59)

Afterlife and Christianity (5:42)

My time with C.S. Lewis (1:35)

All interview audio in MP3 here. (17 minutes)
Enjoy.

A Comment on Yesterday's Line of Fire Radio Program

On Wednesday, April 28, 2010 Dr James White was a request on Michael Brown's radio broadcast. They discussed Mormonism. It was interesting. At the end of this post, I have the program linked to the post. There was a very interesting comment from Dr. Brown's website in which a Mormon woman took issue with what White and Brown said. I think it's worth looking at her comment, Dr. White's response and Dr. Brown's Response. My comments will be black and bold. Her comment will be regular font. Brown's comment will be red bolded and White's will be red.

I usually enjoy your program, but today was an exception. Hearing Dr White speak, I was reminded of the Jews during the ministry of Jesus, those who would mock Jesus because He was not what they had expected. They didn’t believe Jesus was who He said He was because they didn’t have eyes to see or ears to hear.

What if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true??? That would mean that Jesus Christ and God the Father did appear to Joseph Smith and the true Church was restored. It would mean that God speaks through a living prophet today.

I want to ask you and Dr. White a question… Are you and Dr. White really about what you profess, or are you in it for the money, fame or power of your position??? Your anti-LDS attitude truly makes you suspect. The LDS Church never cuts other faiths down— they invite others to come and see for themselves if what they have to offer is true or not. They encourage their members to come to their own conclusions. Does that same philosophy threaten you in any way?

I have investigated many different faiths in my lifetime. I’ll never forget the strong spirit I felt during a special Easter program held in a Baptist church I attended years ago. Over the years I’ve loved hearing people express their honest, heartfelt testimonies of Christ in many different religions. I don’t think there is one religion only that can lead a person to a belief in Christ —and neither does the LDS Church. Belief in Christ comes by hearing and applying God’s word in our life.

I came to know God as my Savior, almost 22 years ago, after reading His words. I was truly born again, something people who knew me then and now can testify of. My life has never been the same and my love of the scriptures has only increased since then!

Ever since I was born again, I have loved reading the Bible and Book of Mormon daily and I love hearing truth wherever it is spoken! My favorite movie to this day is, “Facing the Giants”, written by a Baptist. I love that movie because it is my story in many ways. I went from the depths of despair because of infertility, to the heights of being born of God in the Spirit and experiencing a love, peace and joy I had never known before.

I don’t understand the need you have to make others believe the LDS Church is following a false Christ. Evil may confess that Jesus is the Christ, but evil doesn’t cause anyone to come to Christ and live by His teachings! I and millions of others like me have found faith in Christ and are now faithful members of the LDS Church. If the LDS Church were proven to be false I would never regret the person it has helped me become. Isn’t that the ultimate test of truth???

Debbie,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write. I’m going to ask Dr. White if he has a minute to respond to your important questions.

I will, however, respond directly to the question you asked: “Are you and Dr. White really about what you profess, or are you in it for the money, fame or power of your position???”

I can assure you before God — and I feel confident to answer this on behalf of Dr. White too — that we do what we do with all our hearts for the glory of God and for the sake of truth and for the good of His people and for the benefit of a dying, lost world. God knows I speak the truth! And we do it despite the fact that we often have to make financial sacrifices (to give one case in point, it is common for our debating opponents to receive generous honorariums while we debate for little in comparison, or sometimes for nothing), despite the fact that we are reviled and hated and mocked for our views. There are a thousand easier paths we could both follow — more lucrative and less controversial and painful — but we are committed to following Jesus regardless of the cost or consequences. We count it a sacred privilege.

So, thanks for your question, and I hope my honest answer is meaningful to you. And hopefully, Dr. White will have time to respond to you as well.

Dr. White wrote:

Greetings Debbie:
Thank you for writing. Having spoken with many thousands of LDS over the years, I have heard your objections many times. Before I spoke on the subject of Mormonism publicly I took the time to study it carefully (even your own Scriptures require this: “But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.” D&C 9:8). I read the LDS Scriptures, and such books as A Marvelous Work and a Wonder, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Articles of Faith, Jesus the Christ, and Mormon Doctrine. I obtained the Documentary History of the Church and the Journal of Discourses, etc. It is improper for anyone who loves the truth to respond to someone else’s beliefs sheerly out of emotional attachment to our own faith.
You liken me to the Pharisees who rejected Jesus. May I suggest the parallel is to the Apostle Paul who, upon encountering false teachings about Jesus, said,
“But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.”
(2 Corinthians 11:3–4 NASB)
You asked, “What if The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true???” Well, that’s the issue, isn’t it, Debbie? I have examined the claims of the LDS Church. I find 1) Joseph Smith fails the tests of a prophet, for he not only proclaimed a god beside Jehovah, but he gave forth false prophecies (D&C 114 as one good example); 2) the Book of Mormon is not a historical document and it proclaims false teachings (2 Nephi 25:23, Moroni 10:32, etc.); 3) the Doctrine and Covenants contains numerous false prophecies and tremendous contradictions to the inspired Scriptures (D&C 84, 130:22, 132 etc.); 4) the Pearl of Great Price contains amazing examples of Joseph Smith not being a prophet, the most glaring being the entirety of the Book of Abraham, which not only presents a gross polytheism (using “the gods” more than 45 times), but which has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be a fraudulent “translation by the gift and power of God” of an Egyptian funerary document called the Book of Breathings (see Charles Larson’s tremendous book, _By His Own Hand Upon Papyrus_); and 5) Joseph Smith’s entire foundational story, known as “the First Vision,” is utterly fallacious, a story that developed over time, but which is contradicted by numerous facts of history, not the least of which is the fact that there was no revival in Palmyra in 1820–the exact revival Smith notes, even mentioning men who participated in it (such as Rev. Lane) who were not even *in* Palmyra at the time (the revival took place in 1824).
Now Debbie, I would strongly encourage you to examine these facts for yourself, fairly and openly.
You wrote, “Are you and Dr. White really about what you profess, or are you in it for the money, fame or power of your position??? Your anti-LDS attitude truly makes you suspect.” Money fame and power? Goodness, Debbie, what makes you think ministering to Mormons gives you any of that? In our world today anyone who would say, “This is truth, this is error,” is shunned as a narrow-minded bigot, so surely you cannot possibly believe this kind of argumentation is valid or sound. Besides, given all of the statements made by LDS leaders over the years critical of historic Christian faith, are you being consistent to think in this fashion? Does Joseph Smith’s claim that God called all the Baptists and Methodists and Presbyterians “false” in their beliefs make him “anti-Christian” and therefore suspect as well? If not, why not?
You wrote, “The LDS Church never cuts other faiths down— they invite others to come and see for themselves if what they have to offer is true or not.” May I direct you to the following article I wrote years ago that fully refutes this claim from LDS documents themselves? http://vintage.aomin.org/Quotations.html
Debbie, the Jesus taught by the LDS Church may sound a lot like the Jesus of the Bible, but they could not possibly be more different. Over twenty five years ago I wrote a tract that we have distributed to thousands of Mormons over the decades. I would like to share it with you, Debbie, and ask you to seriously consider what it says.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, speaks often of Jesus Christ. To most people it would seem that Mormonism is just another Christian denomination that teaches Jesus Christ. Is that true? What do the Mormons really teach about Jesus? Following is a list of some of the major points about Jesus as taught by the LDS Church. The references to Mormon scriptures, Mormon apostles, and prophets and their books will be found at the conclusion of this tract.
Is God the Father’s firstborn spirit-child in heaven.1 Since, according to the LDS Church, each one of us was begotten in the same manner, the difference between us and Jesus is simply one of degree.
Is the spirit brother of Lucifer, also known as Satan.2
Was begotten here on earth by God the Father by natural means – just like any other man – and not by the Holy Ghost.3
Sweat his blood for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane,4 and his blood cannot cleanse from all sin.5
Is now one amongst many millions of other gods.6
You may be shocked at these things. We invite you to look these references up for yourself. A lot of Mormons may not be familiar with one or two of these points, but most will admit them to be true. The vital question, then, is this: is the Jesus of Mormonism the Jesus of the Bible? The answer to that is an emphatic, NO!
Here, briefly, is what the Bible says about Jesus:
Is eternal.7 He never had a beginning; nor will He have an end. He is one with the Father,8 the only true God.9
Created all things.10 Everything that exists, Christ created, including Lucifer, who became Satan.11
Was begotten on earth by the Holy Ghost.12 His earthly mother was the Virgin Mary.
Is able to cleanse from all sin through the blood He shed on the cross of Calvary.13
Rose from the dead and has returned to heaven, from which He will return to judge the earth.14
Where does the Bible say that God has a wife, and that He begets children? The Bible says that God creates the spirits of men, not that He begets them.15
Since the Bible says Christ created all things, how can the Mormon Church teach that God the Father was once a man who lived on another planet?.16 Who created that planet? Remember, Jesus created all things, which would include every single planet in existence anywhere in the universe. If Mormonism is right, how could Jesus create a planet before he was even begotten and before his father had become a god?
The Bible teaches the virgin birth of Christ. The miracle of the virgin birth is that Mary was a virgin at the time of the birth. The Mormon Church denies the virgin birth by saying that God the Father in a physical body begot Jesus in the same way we are begotten by our fathers.17 How can this blasphemous teaching be reconciled with the Bible?
The Mormon Church says Jesus is a god, one among many, and that we, too, can become gods, just like Jesus is.18 Why then does God say, “Before me there was no God formed, and neither shall there be after me.”? (Isaiah 43:10).19 Which would you rather believe – a man-made church or God Himself??
Why did Brigham Young, the second Prophet of the Mormon Church say, “It is true that the blood of the Son of God was shed for sins through the fall and those committed by men, yet men can commit sins which it can never remit….they must be atoned for by the blood of the man.”20
How can a sinful man’s blood be more effective than the precious blood of Christ? Listen to this recent Mormon teaching contained in a widely distributed pamphlet:
“Christians speak often of the blood of Christ and its cleansing power. Much that is believed and taught on this subject, however, is such utter nonsense and so palpably false that to believe it is to lose one’s salvation.
For instance, many believe or pretend to believe that if we confess with our lips and avow that we accept him as our personal Savior, we are thereby saved. They say that his blood, without any other act than mere belief, makes us clean.”21
Is it possible that when this pamphlet refers to the “many” who believe this, it is referring to the Apostle Paul when he said, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” (Romans 10:9)? Or when he said, But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. (Romans 4:5). Certainly, the Mormon teaching concerning the blood of Jesus is not Christian.
The Jesus of the Bible, the true, living Lord Christ, is like the Mormon Jesus in name only. Other than name, the Jesus of Mormonism is totally and completely different than the Christ who is worshipped by the Christian Church. As you can see, it was teaching like that of the Mormon Church that Paul warned the Corinthians about in 2 Corinthians 11:4 when he spoke about those who “preach another Jesus,” or when he warned the Galatians about those who would “preach another gospel.” (Galatians 1:8-9).
Don’t be fooled! Some may try to tell you that these things are not pertinent to your salvation. Since salvation is only in and through Jesus Christ (John 14:6), isn’t it essential that we believe in the real Lord Jesus Christ? Can we be saved by a false Jesus?
The true Jesus wants to give you the free gift of eternal life if you will only turn your life over to Him (John 5:24). Read the following verses, and meet the real Jesus of the Bible, and make Him Lord of your life! John 3:16-18, 5:23-24, 14:6, Romans 3:23-28, 4:4-5, 5:1, 10:9-13, 11:6, Acts 16:31.

Sessler's Soapbox: Adam vs. Ebert - Can Video Games be Art? - G4tv.com

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 02: Attendees play vid...Image by Getty Images via Daylife
I was real interested to hear Adam Sessler's thoughts on Roger Ebert's essay on how Video Games is not art. I half agree with Sessler. It doesn't really matter if critics and academics out of the video game industry ever agree that video games will ever be art. It doesn't really matter what they think. Their permission won't make anything better. However I disagree with both Adam and Ebert in that I think of video games as just as much art as paintings, drawings, film, and literature. My definition of art is more broad than Sesslers because I don't think that there is no such thing as art where people don't bring something to the experience of the final product. For example when two people read a story book, even if there are pictures, neither one will imagine the exact same thing. And people always bring their own presuppositions, biases, worldviews, and imagination to everything and that will change how they understand the message of the original author. Art is always subjective. It's just in video games the player joins with the author in telling the story and it will be different depending on the player.

Sex and the Supremacy of Christ, Part 1 (John Piper)

John Piper recently gave the following sermon about the sexuality and it's place in life. He makes great points and can't be ignored. I really never thought about his point that the Old Testament allusions to Israel being like a young woman who has found her soul mate who loves and protects her is just like us whom God saved us from sin and hell.

Paul Verhoeven: ‘Robocop was a Jesus metaphor’?

Paul Verhoeven, the director of the original RoboCop movie, was interviewed by MTV. It was interesting to me about how Verhoeven views the story.

How you do [a remake] now, you’d have to go into all of the digital world, and I’m not sure that would improve the soul of the movie, you know? The point of Robocop, of course, it is a Christ story. It is about a guy who gets crucified in the first 50 minutes, and then is resurrected in the next 50 minutes, and then is like the supercop of the world, but is also a Jesus figure as he walks over water at the end. Walking over water was in the steel factory in Pittsburgh, and there was water there, and I put something just underneath the water so he could walk over the water and say that wonderful line, “I am not arresting you anymore.” Meaning, I’m going to shoot you. And that is of course the American Jesus.
Is he right does Robocop's story mirror Jesus' life? I'm not sure, I'm sure that Verhoeven is referring to the myths of dying and rising saviors of pagan mythologies which cannot be applied to Jesus. I think it's worth further discussion. There are several differences between RoboCop and Jesus.

Jesus chose to lay down his life. He was resurrected and acted on his own without being under other people's control. Jesus predicted his death, burial, and Resurrection, and his claim to deity was validated by his resurrection. Jesus also died for others. He was punished because of our sins.

RoboCop on the other hand was murdered. He did not choose to die. The death of Alex Murphy did not save anyone or get rid of sin. Unlike Jesus' resurrection which confirmed Jesus' identity, Alex Murphy's resurrection detracted from his identity. He be came less than human. Robocop's free will was arrested and he was reprogrammed. None of these traits Jesus shared with RoboCop. The thing I always found interesting was the question about where Murphy's soul went. I think it was firmly established that Robocop retained his soul. I wonder if that means if we can ask if Murphy even really died. He was more than just a puppet on a string. Because of that soul RoboCop transcended his programming.

Exegeting Mark 16:17

I saw the following tweet from tweeter AlmightyGod:

How to tell if someone is really a Christian: http://is.gd/bKcAV

The  link takes you to the following cartoon:

Obviously  the strip is saying that if a person claims to be a Christian, then we must be able to cast out demons, survive snake bites, and survive drinking poison. The conclusion is that Christians are hypocrites because the majority of us are not looking for demons to subjugate, pick up deadly snakes, or drink poison and those that are doing those things are crazy!

There are two problems with this. Anyone who knows anything the Greek texts and it's copies we have of Mark knows that Mark 16:9-20 is not in the oldest manuscripts and was most likely added later! Therefore I don't think that we can say that Jesus actually said it because it does not seem the same author of Mark wrote the Mark 16:9-20. In addition, even if you disagree and say that  Mark 16:9-20 is just as much scripture as the rest of Mark, the cartoon strip twists verse 17-18. Let me quote the NIV and KJV

17And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." (NIV)

 17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (KJV)

Jesus is not telling his followers to pick up snakes or drink poison. The context is in terms of preaching. These signs are to be given to validate the witness not just because. If you happen to pick up a snake or drink poison unbeknown to you these promises are made. In Acts  Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake while he was gathering  wood. He didn't get sick  but it was an accident. I liked how the following web site answered this:

If it is supposed to be in the bible then should we drink poison to get our skeptic "saved"?
We can see from the Devil's testing in the wilderness where Jesus stood on this issue:
(Mat 4:6-7 NIV) "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" {7} Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Like some skeptics, the devil is good at quoting scripture (Psa 91:11-12) and Jesus wisely answers with scripture Deu 6:16. Clearly we should not put God to the test by drinking poison, further God saves using preaching, that is his method (Rom 10:14). (http://www.apocalipsis.org/difficulties/poison.htm)

Roman Catholicism – Was Peter the Rock? Was Peter the First Pope? | True Freethinker

One of the most famous claims about Roman Catholicism is that the Roman Catholic Church is the one true church because Apostle Peter was the first pope and Jesus left him in charge. Matthew 16:13-20 is generally used to teach this. In this particular article (linked below) , Mariano explains why this interpretation is much more an example of eisogesis and not exegesis. He explains that Peter was not the first pope using Biblical evidences. This a great article and well worth reading!

Promiscuous women make the earth move says senior cleric | News.com.au

One of the Spiritual leaders of Iran said the following:

"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes.'' - Iranian Ayatollah Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi
Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi of Iran was quoted to have said the above last week. I didn't know how to respond. I mean the implications given the 4 large earthquakes in the last four months., the implication is not much different than Pat Roberston's Haiti-Made-a-deal-with-the-devil reason for the Haitian earthquake. In other words Sedighi seemed to be saying that nations who have earthquakes are more wicked than nations that don't have earthquakes. It's just as wrong as when Roberston said his statement.

Of course Feminists have gotten really angry. One such women has named Jen McCreight has decided to take him up on the challenge. She has proposed an experiment on her blog Blag Hag.

Sedighi claims that not dressing modestly causes earthquakes. If so, we should be able to test this claim scientifically. You all remember the homeopathy overdose?
Time for a Boobquake.
On Monday, April 26th, I will wear the most cleavage-showing shirt I own. Yes, the one usually reserved for a night on the town. I encourage other female skeptics to join me and embrace the supposed supernatural power of their breasts. Or short shorts, if that’s your preferred form of immodesty. With the power of our scandalous bodies combined, we should surely produce an earthquake. If not, I’m sure Sedighi can come up with a rational explanation for why the ground didn’t rumble. And if we really get through to him, maybe it’ll be one involving plate tectonics. - quoted from her blog

And from an article:

Called “BoobQuake”, Blag Hag’s event calls for women to dress immodestly (but within bounds), in shirts revealing cleavage or in short shorts, in an attempt to bring down the wrath of Allah and cause an earthquake.

I have a problem with this. I agree that Sedighi needs to be answered, but i don't th8ink that this is the way. You don't combat ignorant stupidity with immodesty. Immodesty is another form of ignorance. People dress immodestly and act inappropriately when they don't understand their own worth and what God says about them and His purpose for them. I did find news that there was an earthquake today in Taiwan today on Monday, April 26 - "Boobquake".

According to the Associated Press, a 6.5-magnitude “earthquake struck off the southeast coast of Taiwan on Monday, causing buildings to sway briefly but no casualties or damage. The temblor was felt at the site of a massive landslide in northern Taiwan but did not hamper rescue efforts.” News of the quake has, shall we say, shaken up the event’s Facebook page. One member wrote, “The Taiwan EQ doesn’t count because it happened before the official start of the experiment.” Another surmised: “Our girls are powerful but as half the planet wasn’t even out of bed yet, I seriously doubting [sic] the correlation!” Will Earth lose its cruelly ironic edge? Tomorrow or the next day’s horrendous earthquake will surely tell.

I'm not going to make a comment other than to say that I don't think for a minute that promiscuous and immodest women cause earthquakes. If they did wouldn't places where prostitution is legal be hot beds for big earthquakes? I think that the fact that there aren't frequent earthquakes in Nevada or in Holland makes upping immodesty for a day unnecessary to show that Sedighi is wrong!

Better is that Jesus disagrees with Sedighi

1Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." - Luke 13: 1-4

And we must not forget what the Bible says about modesty!

3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. - 1 Peter 3:3-4

Crucifixion and Resurrection Time Line

One issue that keeps coming up is that people claim that the gospels give conflicting information about when Jesus was crucified. This is not true. There has been great research on how to understand the timeline for what happened the last week before Jesus was crucified. I have found three good online articles about this.

Do Christians Oppose Universal Health Care Because They Think People are Lazy? | Athanatos Christian Apologetics Ministry

I read a real good article about why Christians are against Universal Health Care. The blogger makes a lot of good points. The best one I thought was:
Perhaps we should raise a new objection to universal health care: it isn’t that the people receiving the care are lazy, it’s that the tender-hearted ‘truly compassionate’ people are lazy… they want to have people helped, but they aren’t willing to do it themselves unless the government tells them to do it or if they can get everyone else forced to ‘help’ in the same way.
I for one do not believe that it is any ‘help’ to make an entire nation wards of the state.
I agree. However I don't think universalizing health care would make people "wards of the state". Something must be done because we have hard-working people who can't afford health care and some people are dying because of that. As a Christian I have a huge problem with the idea that the only people who can't afford health care are lazy or don't deserve it. I don't think the blogger is saying that people don't deserve health coverage. However in all the talk, I haven't heard another alternative to the government getting involved in regulating health care and everyone getting the coverage they need. So far the current system is not working. I actually know people who can't afford health coverage and are working hard to support themselves and their families. What about them?
