"Whiteness is a Psychosis": The Viral Clash Between Kehinde Andrews and Piers Morgan on the British Empire

In a heated segment from Good Morning Britain (originally broadcast in February 2020), academic Kehinde Andrews clashed with hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, as well as conservative commentator Toby Young, over the legacy of the British Empire.

The debate was sparked by Labour MP Lisa Nandy's suggestion that the word "Empire" should be removed from the British honours system (OBE, MBE) to make it more inclusive. What followed was a confrontation that went viral for its raw intensity and controversial claims.

The Debate: Key Arguments

1. The "Psychosis" of Whiteness The most explosive moment of the clip comes when Dr. Kehinde Andrews, a Professor of Black Studies, argues that the continued celebration of the British Empire is irrational. He states:

"Whiteness is a psychosis. You can't have a reasonable discussion... because this is the kind of thing you run into."

When challenged by a shocked Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan—who ask if he is calling all white people "psychotic"—Andrews clarifies that he is attacking the ideology of whiteness, not individuals. He argues that it is "deluded" and "irrational" for 60% of British people to believe the Empire was a force for good given its history of "rape, murder, torture, and famine."

2. The Nazi Comparison Andrews further inflames the panel by drawing a direct comparison between the British Empire and Nazi Germany. He argues that the Empire:

  • Did not truly abolish slavery in practice until decades after 1807.

  • Invented the "logic of race" and concentration camps.

  • Paved the way for Nazi ideology.

He equates celebrating the Empire because of its infrastructure to saying, "The Nazis built motorways, so we should celebrate them."

3. The Defense of Empire Toby Young and Piers Morgan push back aggressively. Young argues that the British Empire was essential in defeating Nazi Germany, stating that without the Empire’s resources, Britain could not have stood alone in 1940. He calls Andrews' dismissal of this "psychotic" and accuses him of being the unreasonable one.

Morgan labels Andrews' "psychosis" comment as "racist" and "offensive," attempting to shut down the validity of his academic theory by framing it as a slur against white people.

Reactions and Aftermath

The clip generated a polarized firestorm across social media and the British press.

  • Accusations of Racism: Conservative outlets and viewers largely sided with Morgan and Young. The Daily Mail and The Sun ran headlines focusing on Morgan's accusation that Andrews was being racist against white people. Viewers on Twitter (now X) expressed outrage, calling Andrews "anti-British" and "disrespectful" to war veterans—a sentiment amplified because Andrews had previously appeared on the show calling the RAF bombing of Nazi Germany a "war crime."

  • Support for Historical Revision: Conversely, many anti-racist activists and younger viewers praised Andrews for refusing to sugarcoat colonial history on national television. His supporters argued that Morgan and Young proved his point about "psychosis" by reacting with fragility and refusing to engage with the factual list of atrocities (famine, torture) Andrews presented.

  • Academic Context: The term "Psychosis of Whiteness" wasn't just a throwaway insult; it is a central thesis of Andrews' academic work. In 2023, he released a book titled The Psychosis of Whiteness, which expands on the argument made in this clip: that Western society hallucinates a "benevolent" version of history to avoid facing the reality of systemic racism.

The Bottom Line

This clip remains one of the most cited examples of the cultural disconnect regarding British history. For one side, the Empire is a source of pride and military victory; for the other, it is a crime against humanity that Britain has pathologically refused to acknowledge.

Why was Adolf Hitler wrong? - National Messianic Jewish | Examiner.com

Mariano Grinbank has written a response to an article on the ISU Atheist and Agnostic Society website written by Dave who writes:

Some atheists do believe in ethical absolutes, some don’t. My answer is a bit more complicated — I don’t believe that there are any axiological claims which are absolutely true, except within the context of one person’s opinion.
That is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so are ethics. So, why is Adolf Hitler wrong? Because he murdered millions, and his only justification, even if it were valid, was based on things which he should have known were factually wrong. Why is it wrong to do that? Because I said so. Unless you actually disagree with me — unless you want to say that Adolf Hitler was right — I’m not sure I have more to say.
This is shocking to me. I don't believe that there is anything else any atheist who is sane and yet consistent to his/her worldview could possible say. It's terrible but unavoidable. One of Mariano's arguments was:

Now, what the atheist said is not true anyhow. Why not? Because, by his very own definition, there are no axiological claims which are absolutely true, except within the context of one person’s opinion. Thus, since we are considering his claims from outside of his opinion, we can determine that his statements are not absolutely true. In fact, claims which are made within the context of one person’s opinion are not absolutely true as, by definition, truth is absolute or else it is not truth.
Brilliant.  Mariano wrote an amazing answer that totally points out one of the glaring flaws in Atheism. Check out his article. I have never heard a good answer from an atheist to the challenge of this line of reasoning.

Captain America and Superhero Worldviews, Part 2 | Reflections

Here is part 2 of Dr Kenneth Sample's reflection on the worldview illustrated in Captain America: The First Avenger. I liked his analysis and I agree with him. I'd add in saying that the way Captain America's ethics were demonstrated reminds me of the America I've always wanted and heard about but never actually experienced. Samples is right that America is far from the Triune all-powerful God of the Bible but many moral things were there in the beginning. Rather than rugged and selfish individualism and entitlement the permeates American culture today, Captain America was very much a product of the America of the 1940s - a generation that came of age during the depression and in many ways in the movie, Captain America represented some of the best that generation had to offer. The desire to serve and protect others. The dislike of bullies. There was a line in the movie where Steve Rogers said he wanted to fight Nazis because he does not like bullies. I've seen interviews of real-life WWII veterans expressing the same sentiment. He also said that men were fighting and dying for freedom and said he could do no less. He was not more concerned with his own life than he was about the people around him. He was humble and powerful and he was striving to do the right thing because it was right even when it was hard or inconvenient. This is the America I'd like us to be. It's also the kind of man Captain America is in the Comics. By that way, I also thought the movie was great.

Debunking Christianity: Dr. Avalos vs. Dr. Weikart: The Rematch

God's miracles are surely wondrous! John Loftus posted a link to Justin Brierley podcast called Unbelievable? The podcast he is interested in should be of interest to all of us a debate on the origin of Nazi ideology. Did it come from Darwinism or an anti-semitic Christianity? The debate is between Dr Richard Weikart who is a Christian and professor of History at California State University and Dr Hector Avalos who is an atheist and Professor of Religious Studies at Iowa State University. The link is Unbelievable? 16 Jul 2011 - Debating Nazi Ideology I have to confess I've gotta laugh at the notion of "anti-Judaism Christianity" because it's a contradiction in terms. There have been many inconsistent idiots people who claimed to be "Christians" but hate Jews but given that you can't get any more Jewish than Jesus they can't possibly be real Christians. Forgive me for being logical. I'm glad John Loftus is listening to Brierley's podcast because it will help him.

Would It Have Been Right for a German Christian to Assassinate Hitler? (And an update on the attempt to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”) : Line of Fire

On his Wednesday (12-15-2010) Broadcast, Dr. Michael Brown tackled an interesting philosophical question with weighty moral and theological implications:

Would It Have Been Right for a German Christian to Assassinate Hitler? (And an update on the attempt to repeal “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”)

Er...I meant two subjects!

Adolf Hitler Was a Christian! Was Adolf Hitler a Christian?, parts 7, 8, 9, 10 | True Freethinker

There are the latest part of Mariano's latest series of posts examining the canard I see so often in which people argue that Christianity is responsible fore most of the evil in the world because Hitler was an Christian. Of course laughable, but need to be answers. Mariano Grinbank does exactly that.

Iron Sharpens Iron: SCOTT LIVELY

Scott Lively has been on three programs on Iron Sharpens Iron. He was on to discuss Homosexuality and how Christians should respond. One of the programs covered his book called The Pink Swastika which is about the part homosexuals played in Nazism. All three programs were very interesting. Check out the link below to all three programs. I'm not too sure if I buy his argument that Hitler was gay...or had homosexual relationships, but I think he presents very compelling arguments regarding how Christians should respond to agenda of gay activists. One important argument he made was that we can't demonize homosexual and ignore condemning heterosexuals having sex outside of marriage. I agree...it's all sin and God hates fornication and adultery every bit as much as he hates sodomy. He hates the sin not the people. The other book that Lively wrote and discuss is a textbook on the history of  the gay civil rights movement and how society is affected. He offers the book free or for purpose on his website. These are great resouces.
