Debunking Christianity: "What Justifies the Scientific Method?"

Recently , John Loftus posted a link to a discussion between Dr Stephen Law and Dr Richard Dawkins.  Their discussion was around how do we know the scientific method works and is reliable.

I think the discussion misses some very important distinctions. It's sad that professors of philosophy and science can miss these. The distinctions are between the scientific method and natural materialism.  One can accept one and not the other. They treated these ideas as the same thing. They are not. The scientific method is the methodology for coming to scientific conclusions. These conclusions are not always correct and it is the conclusions that I take issue with not with the Methodology. The other thing to remember is that natural materialism is not the same thing as the method. It is a conclusion that some have erroneously drawn based on methodology that we all agree has it's flaws and can take a long time to arrive at reliable conclusions. Science and Technology such as computers, airplanes, medicine, cars, and other things are not dependent on the assumption of Natural Materialism. They are not the same thing.

the a-atheism blog: Richard Dawkins makes an oxyMORON of himself!

Everyone sometimes says things that are embarrassingly unfortunate.  Even Richard Dawkins.  Case in point!

Debunking Christianity: Sex, Death And The Meaning Of Life

John Loftus posted the three-part documentary in which Dr Richard Dawkins hosts and explores a very provocative question: Can I have morality and meaning in my life without God? I don't think he answered the question. There was a lot of handwaving but nothing that I found worthy of accepting. These are big questions. It's sad to see an intelligent man struggling to answer it and coming up short.

Richard Dawkins interviewing a Muslim guy - YouTube

I found this clip on YouTube where Dr Richard Dawkins interviewed a Jewish man who converted to Islam. It is striking to hear Dawkins seem almost rational. Take a look.

Eastwooding Richard Dawkins - YouTube

Continuing the running cultural gag of debating with an empty chair as if your opponent is sitting there and responding to how you think he may respond to you, William Lane Craig recently used the same tactic in a lecture responding to the argument of  Richard Dawkins.

Eastwooding Richard Dawkins - YouTube

I don't think that Eastwooding was really effective in this situation. I doubt it will make Dawkins come up debate Craig, but it is interesting to see how Craig understands Dawkins' argument.

Richard Dawkins: on discrimination against his atheist religion - YouTube

Richard Dawkins
Cover of Richard Dawkins
I just heard that Richard Dawkins feels like he was discriminated against on the basis of religion in Michigan because a Country Club where he was supposed to be doing a book signing,Magic of Reality, canceled the event because he is an atheist. Wait: Can an atheist can cry "religious intolerance" if atheism is not a religion? Uhhhhh....shelving that for a moment, take a look at a news report on the fiasco at the following link.

Michigan Country Club Reportedly Cancels Richard Dawkins Appearance Following Fox Interview

Here is the interview of Dawkins by Bill O'Reilly which Dawkins clearly blames for his being rejected by the Country Club.

Unfortunately, Bill O'Reilly attitude and rhetoric makes Dawkins seem sympathetic because O'Reilly is so undesirable and even wrong about a great deal of things. Although I think Dr Dawkins' worldview is wrong, it's just as wrong to cancel his book signing no matter how stupid some of his ideas are of he indeed have a contract. Watch Marinano Grinbank's video commentary on this:

the a-atheism blog: Christopher Hitchens & Stagecoach Humiliate Richard Dawkins

Christopher Hitchens
Image via Wikipedia
I've been looking and exploring the much material that has been posted about Christopher Hitchens upon his passing and I think thank at the article I've linked to this post deserves much attention. It underscores many differences between Christopher Hitchens and Dr Richard Dawkins. The other thing that appears in this article is a post to a video of Dr William Lane Craig commenting on Hitchens. I think that the fact that people disagreed with Hitchens yet respected him and they him says a lot about the man - much good things. The important thing to remember is that Hitchens has gone to where he belongs and one day we will all go to where we belong - with God or apart from God. Personally I want to be with God.

the a-atheism blog: Richard Dawkins: "I am ashamed of my university!"

I'm truly enjoying the a-athesim blog. Read the latest entry! There have been some great posts documenting this farce regarding Richard Dawkins refusing to debate Richard Dawkins but continue to insult others and rationalize his own inability. Read the following article:

Richard Dawkins Exhibiting Neo-Paganism-Atheism, Childhood Rejection of God, Self-Professed Erudition, etc. | True Freethinker

Richard DawkinsImage by Shane Pope via FlickrMariano has posted a really great blog post regarding an interview of Richard Dawkins. I highly recommend reading Mariano's insights. Here is my favorite part. Mariano wrote:

In part 3 Dawkins is asked about morality and falls apart as he recalls his incendiary and illogical atheist talking points about how troublesome those religious people are who think that morality extends into what people do in private and or with their sexual organs.
This is the blind leading the even blinder into taking an ice-pick in their hands and bursting their eardrums while they are at it—have a go at your tongue as well and end up completely senseless? (hint, are pedophilia and rape in private are perfectly acceptable?!?!)

Is God a Delusion? William Lane Craig in Oxford - Apologetics 315

So what do you do when you travel thousands of miles on a debate tour but a potential debate opponent is too chicken to show up and defend his printed work? You lecture instead. That's what William Lane Craig did a couple of weeks ago when Richard Dawkins offered excuses for why he refuses to debate people who can beat him. instead of arguments.

the a-atheism blog: Richard Dawkins Attacks John Lennox in Latest Craig-Bitter Hissy Fit!

There has been a great blog article regarding Richard Dawkins' attempt to save face despite his embarrassment at not debating William Lane Craig. The following video and comments from the article are worth considering especially from this quote:

But who could predict that Dawkins would lose all sense of coherence and discernment while throwing his latest tantrum? In a recent forum post on his "clear-thinking oasis" website (Pretentiousness Police! Pull over!) Dawkins actually attacked Prof John Lennox, for being just as unworthy of engaging with as Dr Craig! His reason? That Lennox "masquerades as a scientist while believing Jesus turned water into wine"!

As the video above shows, this excuse did not stop Dawkins debating Lennox three times in the past! Indeed, John Lennox gave an actual argument as to why such a belief is not incompatible with science (briefly: 1. if God exists then he can feed new events into the system he's already created, 2. turning water into wine is such a new event, 3. therefore if God exists then he could do it)!

Dawkins' response? The fallacy of personal incredulity.

And now, behold the abject desperation and emotionalism! Evidently, while still fuming at Dr Craig being endorsed even by fellow Oxford atheists, as worthy of civilised discussion and debate, Dawkins feels the need to lash out even less discriminately than ever before. The important thing to remember is, apparently, that if you're not an atheist.... YOU'RE NOT WORTHY!

I've seen the recording of Dawkins debates with John Lennox and the real issue is that Dawkins lost those encounters and he knows it. Lennox is more than a worthy scholar and scientist. Yes, mathematicians are also just as much scientists as biologists. Richard Dawkins behavior and attitude towards people who disagree with him would be extremely adorable....if he were 2 years-old. Read the rest of the article at the following link.

Why I refuse to debate with William Lane Craig | Richard Dawkins | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Richard Dawkins talking at Kepler's bookstore,...                                    Image via WikipediaDr Richard Dawkins has caught a lot of flack because he refuses to debate Dr William Lane Craig next week. Dr Dawkins is currently on a debate tool in the UK. Dawkins has recently written a letter defending his decision.

Why I refuse to debate with William Lane Craig | Richard Dawkins | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

In other words: He's trying to save face.

However, John Loftus seems to have bought it. Loftus wrote:

I have to admit Dawkins has class. He continually turns the tables on believers. Listen, we would refuse to debate a Holocaust denier, a spokesperson for the KKK, or a militant Muslim. Why would we? Doing so legitimizes their position. He refuses to debate an apologist for genocide even though Craig speaks for the majority of evangelicals in America. It appears that Dawkins doesn't care that Craig's view is a majority view. It's just not right for him to legitimize such an absurd position, and I can admire that.

Richard Dawkins Explains Why He Refuses to Debate William Lane Craig

It's shows the bankruptcy of Loftus position. Purely emotional in trying to compare William Lane Craig to a Holocaust denier and the KKK. A really poor argument. I consider it inconsistent to support Dawkins not debating Craig but saying that he should debate Craig. If it's a crisis of conscience making Dawkins not want to debate Craig so that he will not "legitimize such an absurd position", then where is Loftus' conscience if he agrees with Dawkins?

No. I think the truth is more better put forth by

Neil deGrasse Tyson at the Beyond Belief Conference, 2006

Tyson at the NASA Advisory Council in Washingt...                             Image via WikipediaI like Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson. He is a great astrophysicist and is great at communicating science, history, and philosophy. I don't agree with him on everything but I enjoy listening to him. In 2006, he gave the following speech at the Beyond Belief Conference which was attended by the likes of Dr Sam Harris, Dr Lawrence Krauss, Dr Michael Shermer, and Dr Richard Dawkins.

In the speech he describes his feeling that being religious is science stopper. He says that "revelation stops inspiration." I disagree. No doubt that Tyson is correct about Newton's brilliance. But intelligent design is not just to be invoked for when we reach our limits. In my opinion, those pioneers of western science would be the first to credit God for the stroke of insight that allowed them to make their discoveries. Intelligent Design is not meant to make you stop looking into understanding that design. I don't think Newton's religiosity at all undermined Newton. It inspired him.  I think the reason he didn't go farther because God didn't give it to him. God gave it to his successors. Thankfully, Dr Tyson does not go as far as Dawkins does underestimating and undervaluing people who believe in God.

Richard Dawkins stumped by Creationist question - YouTube

Here is a video uploaded to YouTube by ShockofGod. I've seen the video before but I like the annotations so much that I think it bears watching again.

Alright, let's try to be fair to Dr Dawkins. To this date, I have seen no evolutionist give an answer this question. If anyone has seen an answer, please feel free to leave a comment. Richard Dawkins stumped by Creationist question - YouTube
