I tried out the new Augmented Reality(AR) app for promoting the Amazing Spider-Man movie at Walmart. It's like the Avengers' Superhero AR app that came out last April in conjunction with that movie. This app was designed by the same company that did that Avengers app and although it shares some similarities it's also different. One difference is that when you use the AR photos, Spider-Man is not in a pose where it's simple to take a picture with him. The poses are more action-oriented and now there is interaction in that Spider-Man speaks to you when you click on him. I think there are four pictures that give you this experience. There is also a comic book you can buy from Walmart that gives a short battle sequence of Spider-Man fighting the Lizard. And there is a promise for a Spider-Man themed truck that will come to various Walmart locations and give people a chance to test out the new console video game and other goodies associated with the film. If you point the app at the truck you get to see another AR scene. I haven't seen it yet.
The app does give you access to see which Walmarts the truck(s) will visit. There are few compared to the total number of Walmarts in my area: one or two compared to the seven that are within a 30 mile radius of my residence. I notice that not all of the Walmarts are also taking part in the promotion. For example not all of them have the AR posters at all. The Walmart closest to my residence doesn't even have the AR posters. It reminds me of how I never did find a Walmart in my area that had the Black Widow character poster during the Avengers promotion. I'd like to know more about how the Walmart handles these things. It's almost like if the local managers don't care, we miss out on whatever corporate is doing...or corporate doesn't care about certain neighborhoods. I wonder which it is.
Oh...well, here are some of the AR Pictures I shot.
The game in this case, is the option to go around the store and build a webshooter starting June 26th. If you try to do it now, you get an AR of first-person Spider-Man arms that shoots wads of webbing wherever you want. Again, it is available for Android and iOS.

Walmart Unveils Super Hero Augmented Reality App | Avengers | News | Marvel.com
Only one of my Android devices is supported but my iPad 2 is supported. We went Friday evening to test it out!
The game is actually really fun too, but I have to go back to unlock all the characters. It's all free. You use their powers in an augmented reality environment to shoot down enemy spacecraft.
Walmart Unveils Super Hero Augmented Reality App | Avengers | News | Marvel.com
With more than 100 million augmented reality-capable smartphones in operation today, Walmart is putting the devices to good use. Customers can use “Super Hero AR” in two modes, Game Mode and Photo Capture Mode. Here is how it works:My family and I had a great time playing with this. Keep in mind that you have to use an internet connection before you start to use it. After the initial set up, you don't need the internet unless you want to Facebook your pictures right away. My kids took pictures with Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk. It was almost as if they were right there.
Game Mode: Collect All Six Super Powers and Save the World
-Download the “Super Hero AR” App from the iTunes App Store or Android Market that also includes instant access to Hawkeye and his super powers
-Visit a local Walmart with your enabled smart device
-Seek out specific images on "Marvel's The Avengers" signage located in various departments around the store including apparel, grocery, toys and wireless
-Aim your smart devices at the target image to unlock each super hero’s power
-Collect the powers of the five remaining Avengers and get a chance to defeat Loki and win the game
Photo Capture Mode (available for iOS and Android): Take a Photo with Your Favorite Avenger
-Activate “photo capture mode” from a "Marvel’s The Avengers" DVD pallet in-store; a 3-D model of the super hero depicted on the DVD pallet will become visible on your phone
-Take a photo with your favorite Avenger
-Share it with friends on Facebook or via email

Teacher's iPad Experiment Shows Possibilities for Classroom Technology - Education - GOOD
I think the idea of using tablets in the classroom is an excellent one! It doesn't have to be just for reading and writing. They can also be used for math! iPads are expensive but they don't always have to be the device of choice. Inexpensive 10' android tablets could also fit the bill! This is really a good article. Take a look.

Google Body - Android Market
Google Earth for the Human Body. Cool Idea. Google is working on a 3D model explorer for the human body. I'm having much trouble getting it to work on a PC running Windows XP and there is
an Android Version but it only works on version 3.0 or better. Alas I don't have a device with an operating system that new. Oh well, guess I'll just have to settle for the demo videos for right now.

Google Body is a detailed 3D model of the human body. You can peel back anatomical layers, zoom in, and navigate to parts that interest you. Click to identify anatomy, or search for muscles, organs, bones and more.
You can also share the exact scene you are viewing by copying and pasting the corresponding URL.
You will need a web browser that supports WebGL, such as Google Chrome.

Official Android App
It's taken several weeks but I finally figured out how to make the first image on each blog post to show up in the Android App that I put together to compliment this blog. The other features I had on the earlier drafts are still here:
1. Single post viewed one at a time.
2. Link to the full blog.
3. Link to each post on the blog.
4. Reads the post out loud through that phone speakers.
5. Shaking the phone closes the app.
The app should work on any android powered device. Further, I've placed the apk file on the media fire site for free download. I've also generated at a QR code for download. If you have an Android phone/tablet please download the BeeTagg app from the Android Market for free to download and install my app directly to you phone. Just scan the QR code below. You can find out more about BeeTagg by going to my post about it on my gadget blog.
Here is a short video showing the app in action. If you try it out, please leave some comments about it. Please note that your web browser will pop up allowing you to download the app and then you can use your preferred method of installing apk's on your device. I suggest Rhythm Software's Installer.

My Fourth Android App - WHHWappV3
Well here is the fourth version of my app for Android based on the RSS Feed of this blog. This program still doesn't show images but it does parse the feed correctly to get the images urls. Turns out that there is a bug in Google App Inventor for showing large images by url in the image control. The new thing I added to this app is button in which the post is read out loud when you press a button.
Below you can use the QR code to download the app yourself. And there is a video of the app in action alo below. I have an upcoming post on my Favorite Gadgets blog that goes into more detail on how this app was built. In the future, I want to try a version of this app that does not use App Inventor but standard development tools for Android. I'll post those results when they become available.
