No Christian Is Saying That, Dr Flowers

The argument suggesting that the Bible is believable the same way the Qur'an is believable. Christians do not argue that the Qur'an is readable.

Answering Muslims: Refuting Shabir Ally on the Crucifixion of Jesus

Now here is a gem. David Wood and Pastor Joseph discuss Shabir Ally's teaching regarding Jesus' Crucifixion.  Amazingly, the majority of Muslims deny that Jesus was crucified on a cross by the Romans despite this being a fact of history. How does Shabir Ally reconcile this with Islam? Really badly. This point is the main reason to deny Islam. The Quran says that Jesus did not die the way everything we know says He did. David Wood does a real good job in laying this out.

Answering Muslims: Islamic Bookstore Sells out of Violently Misogynistic "A Gift for the Muslim Couple"

David Wood posted an article about a book describing how Muslim marriages should run.  He not on;y points out a passage from the Qur'an many Muslims use to tell them that they should beat their wives and wives should allow themselves to be beaten. I realize some people might read this and not follow the link so here is the Qur'anic passage:

Qur'an 4:34—Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

The book the article that David writes about attempts to explain how would someone live this out:

Page 45 contains the rights of the husband, which include his wife’s inability to leave “his house without his permission,” and that his wife must “fulfil his desires” and “not allow herself to be untidy ... but should beautify herself for him ... ”

In terms of physical punishment, the book advises that a husband may scold her, “beat by hand or stick,” withhold money from her or “pull (her) by the ears,” but should “refrain from beating her excessively.”

Yup, Marital bliss alright. The truth is that not all Muslims would agree with that. But like David Wood observeed:

I hate to break this to everyone, but if Tarek Fatah rejects what this book says about beating women, he's not a "moderate" Muslim. He's not a Muslim at all, because he accepts Western values as a higher source of morality than the Qur'an.

Answering Muslims: U.S. Department of Defense Unveils New Quran Sensitivity Training Program

David Wood has posted the slides the Department of Defense may be using new Quran Sensitivity training. David observes:

Hmmm. "We will hold sacred the beliefs held sacred by others." And here I thought the First Amendment guaranteed our right to freedom of religion. Now we find out that we MUST hold Islamic beliefs "sacred." Sharia is sacred to Muslims. The belief that Muhammad is a prophet is sacred to Muslims. The superiority of Islam is sacred to Muslims. It seems that if Muslims hold slaughtering unbelievers, killing apostates, beating wives, raping women, and sex with prepubescent girls "sacred," we must do the same.

I see his point. there is indeed a inconsistency.

Answering Muslims: Kira Davis Apologizes to President Karzai over Quran Burnings

You may have heard that there are Muslims in Afghanistan who want some Americans to be tried for burning Qur'ans on an American base in Afghanistan. I appreciate David Wood for pointing out this video. I am also thankful that Kira Davis apologized to President Karzai on our behalf!

Did the Umayyads change the Qur'an? - YouTube

David Wood has posted another great video from L'Orientalist on his blog

Muslims tell us that the Qur'an has been perfectly preserved. Oddly enough, there isn't a shred of evidence for this preposterous claim. Indeed, a brief examination of the history of the Qur'an reveals significant changes to the text. In this video, L'Orientalist shows that changes were taking place even after Uthman produced his revised, standardized edition of the Qur'an.

FacePalm of the Day #111 - Islam and Christianity A Common Word: Christian apologist admits New Testament contains fabrications and weak chains of narration!

I don't know exactly what thegrandverbalizer has against James White but I have rarely seen worse characterization and twisting done of someone else's words. Reading this left me wondering if we heard the same podcast!

People this is why I do what I do! Every year more and more conservative Christians are letting the cat out of the bag in subtle and profound ways! I knew it was a matter of time. I have been saying it for a long time now. Mash'Allah James White brings Christianity closer to Islam in subtle yet profound ways!

I don't understand. How does thegrandverbalizer's work relate to the conservative Christians bringing Christianity closer to Islam (which I don't see happening either)?

Read on...

Not that he answered my question.

Recently on an internet basement pod cast Christian apologist James White admitted that the New Testament contains the following:

1) That which we know is said about Jesus without doubt.
2) That which we know is said about Jesus but there is some doubt.
3) That which is attributed to Jesus but is extremely weak.
4) That which is attributed to Jesus but is an outright fabrication.

Praise be to Allah! Thank you James for your honesty at last!

Listen for yourself! I have saved this program as well in case James White has it removed.

http://aomin.org/aoblog/index.php?itemid=4721

I listened to that broadcast myself when it was done live and Dr James White did not say that the New Testament was errant.  He was referring to textual variants. He was in now way saying that we don't know what text says.

Christian Apologist James White Admits New Testament contains fabrications and weak chains of narration!

No He didn't.

At 43:25 minutes into the dividing line program he says,
"as soon as you start taking for example the various stories of the companions of things that happened in Muhammad's life outside of the Qur'an you immediately see what you actually have with the New Testament!"

I wonder if thegrandverbalizer listened to the 43:25 minutes that went before?  Because if he had he would have realized that Dr White was referring to the fact that there would be textual variants  of the Qur'an.

That is a most fascinating claim on behalf of James White! It deserves considerable attention!

If you ask any Sunni Muslim about 'the various stories of the companions of things that happened in Muhammad's life outside of the Qur'an' or simply called the Hadith you will find out the following:

What about Muslims that aren't Sunnis would they agree?

Hadith means story. Hadith in Islam mean a written body of literature that is a record of statements, contracts and actions of the Prophet Muhammad otherwise called 'Sunnah'.

Now what you will also find out is that this body of literature 'the hadith' contains the following.

1) That which we know that Muhammad said without a doubt.
2) That which we know that Muhammad said with some doubt.
3) That which is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad but it is weak.
4) That which is attributed to the Prophet Muhammad but it is in outright fabrication.

This was very good of James White to admit this. I have to say that my level of respect for him has honestly not been very high at all. However, after James White has said this I can now take this quote of his to his peers and colleges whom admire him and say, "Look even James White whom you say has more knowledge than you do and whom you look up to said this!"

He said that about the Hadith containing fabrication not the New Testament.

Now since James has said that 'what you actually have with the New Testament' is the same as the Hadith literature I would like for James to now explain to his listeners how this effects the doctrine of inspiration.

thegrabdverablizer clearly did not understand what Dr. White said.

For example since now the New Testament is simply just a collection of oral traditions that are attributed to Prophet Jesus (Esau) than does this clash with the doctrine that the 'writers' of the New Testament were inspired by the Holy Spirit to pen down revelation?

He never said that the New Testament "is simply just a collection of oral traditions that are attributed to Prophet Jesus (Esau)". It's statements like this that make me wonder if thegrandverbalizer ever read the New Testament because only four of the 27 books of the New Testament narrate the life of Jesus.

In fact is it even appropriate to speak of 'writers' of the New Testament now?

Huh?

On what basis does James determine what statements attributed to Jesus, Peter, Paul and others are true, sound, weak and fabricated?

He never said he had to. thegrandverbalixer is making the assertion that one has to.

This I tell you friends is fascinating! We are living in fascinating times! James White if your findings take you to the logical conclusion you are always welcome as a brother in Islam! :)

thegrandverbalizer's post is not the best example of logic.

Now you will understand how we use as presupposition the basis of the Qur'an to determine what anyone who came prior to Muhammad said. After all Allah keeps perfect record of what his prophets did or did not say. You will also now understand more fully why Muslims may incline towards some statements in the New Testament and stir clear of others.

Translation: Only the parts of the New Testament that agrees with thegrandverbalizer's misunderstanding of the Bible and his understanding of Islam are correct. That mean you have to be really sure you can know if the Bible, Qur'an, or the Hadith are right or wrong. And thegrandverbalizer often gets things wrong in the Old and New Testaments.

Very very good James!

Dr James White did a really good podcast that day for sure. As for thegrandverbalizer's post - not so much.

FacePalm of the Day #109 - The Atheist Literature Club: Religitics - Aftermeeting Discussion 2 - No, mine!

funny gifsJohn Loftus posted the following on his blog: Lots of facepalms here.
Here is a debate between Valerie Dennett an atheist, Zakir Deedat a Muslim, Greg Turkel a Christian, Hugh Talmage a Mormon, and Moritz Duam a Jew. This is what I'm talking about!

Here is what he linked to. He thinks that it shows exactly what the Outsider Test for Faith (OTF) would look like if it were put into practice in a real discussion between the major religions of America. It is presented as if it is a real transcript of real people talking about religion. There are a couple of things that make me skeptical. 1. No one makes me believe that anyone of the participates know what themselves or the other participates believe beyond  straw men and what anyone can glean from mainstream media. 2. No one offers any serious apologetic for why they believe what they believe beyond ridiculing others. 3. The names of the participants could possibly be made up. I've annotated the post exaplaining where it fails to be convincing and the OTF.

A little while after the meeting, Valerie stepped back into the room. The men were still arguing.

"There is absolutely no truth in the Koran." Turkel was saying. "Only a fool would follow the teachings of Muhammad instead of Jesus."

Anyone who would say this means that they have never read the Qur'an. There is some good in it. Some things that are in it that are true. Unfortunately it is a charge many ignorant Christians make.

"The plain fact is that the bible was corrupted!" Zakir shot at him. "Only the Koran is the real work of God."

Funny, how I've never heard a Muslim disagree with this statement despite the fact that no one can demonstrate it. I can't blame them because the Bible contradicts the Qur'an. Although the Qur'an does not say that the Jewish and Christians scriptures are corrupted  but if the Muslim does not believe that then there is much he or she must answer.

"The Koran got everything wrong about Jesus," Turkel replied.

Well, not everything. Sinless. Born of  a Virgin.  Nope, the Qur'an did not get everything wrong about Jesus. This is one of the reason why I think that this piece is fictitious (doesn't rate the status of  "parable"): a real knowledgeable person would never say something so outlandish.

"How do you know?" Zakir asked him, harshly.

He doesn't Turkel was asked about how he knew the Qur'an says nothing correct about Jesus, Notice how Turkel doesn't answer the question. .

"There are four men who wrote about the life of Jesus," Greg Turkel answered him. "All of them agree with each other about what went on in his life."

I agree but that doesn't answer Zakir's question.

"Nonsense!" Zakir shot. "Each of those men were late and disagreed with each other fantastically. There are swarms of contradictions among them! Only the Gospel of Barnabas is the true depiction of the life of Jesus, where he admits that he is not the messiah!"

What happened to the discussion  of the Qur'an? Zakir is just as bad as Turkel. No proof is offered that the Gospel of Barnabas was not corrupted and that the New Testament was not corrupted.

"Rubbish!" Turkel snapped, pointing a finger at him. "You know darn well that that 'gospel' is even later than Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John!"

Now that's true.

"That's right, " Hugh Talmage joined. "The New Testament writers are more reliable than Barnabas."

Now that's true.

"Oh, excuse me," Zakir mocked. "And we are also to belief that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri?"

I admit that this is a weakness in Mormon Theology but it doesn't help the conversation

Hugh turned red with rage and was about to respond when Moritz Duam overrode him.

Sure would like to have seen the Mormon respond to that charge, but who ever made up this conversation probably doesn't know what the Mormon Apologetic is.

"Even though Barnabas is late it doesn't help the gospels." He argued. "For they portray a man who was not the messiah."

Oh, another argument people make who don't know better. And no substantiation  offered whatsoever.

"He WAS the messiah," Greg replied. "He met the standards of the messianic prophecy!"

Agreed, and it's demonstrably true.

"No he didn't!" Moritz yelled. "The messiah is to reveal himself when all on Earth belief in God. That has never happened!"

Sure would like to know where in Tanak that is written. It's just thrown out there and no reference.

"How do you know such a thing?" Turkel yelled back. "Were YOU there?"

Neither were any of the speakers. Adds nothing to the discussion.

"Of course not," Moritz said hotly. "But I didn't have to be there to know that the Christians just stole from the Hebrews!"

More inflammatory argument. Anyone bother to pick up a book? All of the first Christians were Hebrews.

"Rubbish!" Turkel responded, pounding the table.

Oh that's a useful come back.

"It's the truth." Moritz countered. "Why else would the bible contain the works of the Hebrews? We all know that the old and new testaments don't match. The Christians simply took a man from history and tried to make him fit the prophecy!"

And the proof is...?

"Both are right and wrong," Hugh Talmage spoke up. "Joseph Smith got down and prayed which church to join, and an angel of the lord told him that none of them have it right. Not that all of them, particularly Christianity, but..."

And the proof is...?

"Oh, be quiet," Zakir shot. "Nobody takes your faith seriously, not even some of the other Mormons. You are essentially on par with the church of scientology."

Well...that's no way to change another man's mind.  Not that proof or evidence would work, but it's always better to try it.

"You've obviously never read the Book of Mormon," Hugh snapped at him. "It would change your life if you had."

I find that most Atheists think that this is the kind of answer is the only one all theists have. Not true.

"No, it would not."

A better answer would be "It didn't."

"Unlikely,"

"I highly doubt that."

If you haven't tried it, then you haven't applied OTF very well have you. The answers given show that none of the speakers have applied the OTF to any one else's worldview.

All three men answered at the same time. Even Valerie scoffed at the idea. She was resting her chin on her hand, listening to them men argue.

Valerie scoffed for a different reason than the  men.

"Why?" Hugh asked, turning red.

Duh. Not much of an apologetic.

"Your ideas are absurd, that's why." Moritz said. "You actually think that ancient Jews sailed to America?"

"Well..." Hugh tried.

Should have let Hugh try to present evidence.

"Not to mention that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri," Zakir sneered.

"All seem very unlikely," Turkel finished.

To dismiss a man on possibility  is not enough. Where is the discussion? Facts. Evidence.

"Look, you want to know why I believe," Hugh asked, still red. "You really want to know."

"Not particularly," Mortiz replied.

And that is the problem in discussions like this. No one listens to the other person.

"It's because I asked for the truth," Hugh asked. "I got down on my knees and I asked God himself if it was true. And he told me, I could feel it in my stomach, his precense as he..."

And that's not a good enough reason to follow anything.

He couldn't finish because Zakir and Moritz guffawed in the middle of his speech. Turkel chuckled softly to himself. A smile came onto Valerie's lips.

Of course most Atheists seem to think that this is the only reasoning theists are capable of.

"He says he felt it in his stomach!" Zakir mocked, wiping his eyes. "He does not think that it was just a case of indigestion?"

Oh, yes. That's destructive.

"Perhaps it was the indigestion of the angel, Moroni!" Moritz joined.

Right. Helpful

"That is as ridiculous as the claim that Jesus rose," Zakir laughed.

When you make fun one person, you always open yourself up to the same.  Which is it that's ridiculous: the angel's Moroni's indigestion or that the Book of Mormon brings conviction of truth when reading it.

"Now hold on!" Turkel scolded. "That's another bogus claim. If you think Jesus didn't rise then you're as low as Hugh!"

Careful. As a Mormon, Hugh would believe in Jesus' Resurrection.

"Hey!" Talmage cried, outraged.

"How can you believe such nonsense!?" Zakir asked. "The story is so implausible!"

Which story, The Resurrection or Mormon mythology theology?

"Well, how can you explain the fact that Josephus, a secular Jewish historian, confirmed the resurrection?" Turkel asked.

Problem is Josephus didn't, but that doesn't mean the Resurrection did not happen.

"Nonsense!" Moritz countered. "That passage in Josephus was not written by any man of the Jewish faith. He never would have called Jesus the messiah, and he believed a whole different man was the messiah!"

Many knowledgeable scholars would disagree. Why isn't any of their work cited?

"But he mentioned Jesus twice!" Turkel replied.

Yup, but this comeback is poorly constructed.

"So what?" Moritz asked. "Even if that was true, it wouldn't show that he rose from the dead! Besides, he was talking about a completely different Jesus, which wasn't an uncommon name, you understand."

Now that is not a great comeback.  No way to prove it that Josephus was talking about a different man than the New Testament is about.

"Many secular historians mention Jesus and..."

That's true.

"Most of their testamonies are discussing what Christians believe!" Zakir snapped. "They are completely irrelevant to your case!"

And the fact that Christians believed in a man from Galillee was God made flesh, and died from their sins freeing them from sin and death is not irrelevant at all in showing who Jesus is.

"Are you insinuating that Jesus did not exist?" Turkel growled.

Which I thought was Turkel's point.

"Of course not," Moritz said. "There is little history on his existence, though there is some. But there is even less that he was the messiah. Less that he rose from the dead."

Okay, so Mortz is trying to explain what he meant. But he overstates his case.

"You're spewing nonsense!" Turkel snapped at them. "That's almost as wrong as saying that the Gospel of Barnabas was the real account of Jesus!"

Yup, that's wrong. But I doubt that would make anyone see that.

"The bible was corrupted!" Zakir yelled. "We, Muslims, know this. None of your evidence is good enough!"

What evidence is that? How do Muslims know this.

"There is no reason to believe that Muhammad was any more than a fraud!" Turkel countered.

Oh more unsubstantiated accusations follow others.

"Has it occured to any of you that you ALL might be wrong?"

It was Valerie. The men looked at her.

We should all consider that. Even the Atheist.

"What are you talking about?" Zakir snapped.

"I mean, listen to yourselves," Valerie said, pushing up her glasses. "You all accuse each other of being wrong while claiming that your religion is right. You critize every other religion harshly and find it foolish to believe. But, let me ask you something. If you were to examine your own religion like you do for others, do you think that you'd still believe it?"

That's a good question.  Does Valerie do the same?

"Oh, so the ATHEIST thinks she knows how the world works?" Zakir growled.

Only God knows how the world works.

"I didn't say that," Valerie replied. "I just think that you should all look at what you believe from my perspective. I wasn't always an non-believer. I was actually a Christian growing up. But I began to question my views and I took the position of an outside and looked at my religion as a skeptic would. I realized that nobody, unless having been brought up to belief it, would buy the stories of religion."

Did John Loftus write this, drivel? It ignores the fact that people convert to other religions all the time.

"Valerie, you failed to do the simplest thing in the world," Hugh Talmage told her. "All you needed to do was pray to God for verification and..."

All she needed to do was open up the  Bible and do some research.

"He would answer if I had an open heart," Valerie finished for him. "I've heard that a hundred times, Hugh. The thing is, I did have an open heart and I did pray. But any feeling I got was just me feeling something because I felt I was suppose to feel something. That wasn't enough for me."

It was nothing to do with an open heart. If God doesn't open it, it won't be opened.

"Have you actually read the Bible, Valerie?" Turkel asked. "If you have, you..."

Turkel and Talmage's answes are the same to Valerie. A knowledgeable Christian wouldn't give the same answer.

"Would believe the truth that lies within it," She finished. "I have read the Bible, Greg. I didn't find it very convincing."

And this is how we know what anyone's spiritual state is:

18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. -1 Corinthians 1:18-25

"How come?" Greg asked.

"Well, I don't believe in talking snakes or donkeys, for one," Valerie told him. "I don't believe that a man can rise from the dead. I don't believe that a man can live in a whale. I don't believe that a man can cause another man to rise from the dead. I also don't believe in unicorns, which are mentioned in the Bible."

Valerie can believe whatever he or she chooses. However that doesn't make it wrong or right. And if  "unicorns" in the  Bible is offensive then read another translation. Modern translations more correctly translate those passages. Unicorns cannot be found in Hebrew culture. so we know that isn't what was thought to be in original texts.

"Well, I'm not sure why the authors mentioned unicorns," Turkel said. "I'm open minded about it. It could be metaphorical for something, it could be they mistook something for a unicorn. But, my main objection to you is that you are clearly biased in your assesment of miracles. You assume, out of hand, that they never occur. That's completely circular."

Bad answer.

"I never said that I KNOW miracles don't happen," Valerie replied. "I said that I don't believe that they do. There's a difference. Maybe I should have said that I'm very skeptical of claims of miracles.

Oh she misspoked.

I think David Hume was correct in what he said about miracles. I mean, what is more likely? That the laws of nature were suspended so that you might be revived from the dead, or that the person telling you this is gravely mistaken?

So although you don't KNOW miracles cannot happen, she and other choose to believe they didn't. That makes sense.

It's not circular, it's a question of what's more likely. If I told you that I could make a flashlight fly into my hands, you'd probably dismiss me as having imagined the whole thing. And rightly so."

Or one would be a Jedi. Much sense as a flying spaghetti flying monster. My question would be why? Each and every miracle in the Bible had a reason.

"So you don't believe in God?" Moritz asked. "How can you be so sure? Isn't your atheism just as much as a faith position?"

Good question.

"Not really." Valerie replied. "I would say that I'm more of an atheist against religion. About the notion of God, I am more of an agnostic. I just don't think, if there is a God, that we are able to understand him or what he, or she, or they, or it want us to do."

Standard answer when an atheist gets too close to the fire.

"Your position is laughable," Zakir growled. "Only a fool would not believe in a divine creator."

"Really, Zakir?" Valerie asked him. "I read a very interesting book once and the author suggested to people of faith that they take a test. He called it the Outsider Test for Faith. Basically, you take the position of a skeptic and you anaylze the claims of your religion like an atheist or an agnostic would. Then, if your religion passes, you have a good faith. Unfortunately, he, nor I, think that any religion passes that test."

She didn't answer his question.

"That's foolish!"

"Rubbish!"

"Absolute nonsense!"

"That's just absurd!"

All men raged at her at the same time.

Give her a second.

"Let me ask you something, Valerie," Greg Turkel said. "Have you subjected your faith to this test that you're talking about. Have you questioned your skepticism as an outsider to it?"

Another good question.

"An outsider to skepticism is a person of faith," Valerie told him. "They already believe and of course they would find it difficult to believe what I do. But atheism isn't a faith. If all religions fail the outsider test then atheism, the lack of belief in religions, is all that is left. Or you can be an agnostic if that suits you better."

So the answer is  "No."

"Well, I promise you that the Christian faith passes that test with flying colors." Turkel said. "I was once in your position, Valerie, but I found the truth in God's word through his son."

"Yes, but did you consider anyone else's faith before finding Jesus?" Valerie asked. "Did you see if perhaps Zakir was right? Or maybe Hugh?"

I have. They failed.

"Only a fool would believe the nonsense of the 'Latter Day Saints'," Zakir sneered. "But if anyone who takes such a test were to apply it to the Koran, they would not be able to rationally deny that the Koran is real vessel of truth."

"Nonsense!" Turkel and Moritz both raged.

"I'm tired of your bashing my faith!" Hugh cried, outraged.

They began arguing again. Valerie sighed and buried her face in her hands again. Then she stood up and walked out of the room.

No one not even Valerie was willing to "put up or shut up"  Which is the problem in most of these discussions. No one truly really ready to step up. :Loftus has tried to posit that the OTF can be found in the Bible. I agree. Look at the account of Elijah on Mount Carmel. Elijah through down the gauntlet and slapped his opponents with the proverbial glove.

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
   But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”1 Kings 18:18-24
Fair enough. This was the OTF in action. If you ask God to do God stuff in your life and willing to follow the evidence wherever it goes. You will find God!

FacePalm of the Day #101 - Islam and Christianity A Common Word: Sex, Sensuality in the Christian Heaven.

thegrandverbalizer is at it again. This time he attacks what Christianity has to say about human sexuality and instead of showing what the Bible actually says, he twists scripture into a pretzel  to get what he wants out of the text.

It truly is unfortunate when one reflects upon early Christian attitudes towards sexuality. It reflects an almost Gnostic (anti-human) and (pro being) stance.

I'd be one of the first to admit that the Christian church has historically done a poor job in it's attitude towards sexuality. I find little of the idea that something is wrong with sexuality in the Bible but it's all over church history. Sexuality is a gift from God to humanity. And like any gift it's awesome when properly used and respected. Too bad we, as people, have really screwed that up

Islam is a reflection of the reality of what the Creator actually made. Allah has made us as Human/Beings.
We are animals (human) with a soul (being). In Islam you do not nurture or neglect one aspect of your reality to the detriment of the other.

Um, denying sexual feelings and desire is not a part of what the Bible teaches either. The Bible does not say we are animals either. Animals don't have souls. Animals have spirits. I realize that some people a long time ago got it into their heads that denying themselves the joy of sex within marriage somehow brought them closer to God. They didn't get this idea from the Bible so basing a polemic on it is dishonest.

The Noble Prophet Muhammed said, "Who ever does not marry is not of us." He is talking about people who have taken upon themselves monasticism; of which Allah says was never ordained for human beings.

"Whomever marries has completed half their faith now let them complete the other half by fearing Allah and doing what is right" -Noble Prophet Muhammed.

"Then We caused Our Messengers to follow in their footsteps; and We caused Jesus, son of Mary, to follow, and gave him the Gospel, and placed compassion and mercy in the hearts of those who followed him. But monasticism they invented-We ordained it not for them-only seeking Allah's pleasure, and they observed it not with right observance. So We give those of them who believe their reward, but many of them are evil-doers." ( Holy Qur'an 57:27)

Notice the difference between what God inspired Muhammad to say and what He inspired Paul to say:

26 Because of the present crisis, I think that it is good for a man to remain as he is. 27 Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife. 28 But if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face many troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.
36 If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get married. 37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. 38 So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does better. - 1 Corinthians 7:26-38
The Bible says that you can be married or not be married and still be righteous in the eyes of God. Now grant it, if you ain't married you will be celibate, but that does not make one better worse than the other. Look at how thegrandverbalizer twists Jesus' words.

"For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." (Matthew 19:12)

No doubt this is a continuation of an earlier admonishment reported to have been given by Jesus where he is to have said,

If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. (Matthew 5:29-30)

Um, no. And these are in two different contexts at two different times.
Matthew 5 came before Matthew 19. The quotation in Matthew 19, Jesus was talking about why you should not divorce your wife for any reason other than adultery. Beats "hitting her lightly in the face" like Muhammad commanded right? Matthew 5: 29-30 is about avoiding sin.

"If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. (Matthew 18:18)

Matthew 18:18 is  the wrong reference. Matthew 18:8-9 is what was quoted and it is in reference to avoiding sin..

So we can see here it was not necessary for Jesus to say "If your penis offends you, if your ears offend you etc... people pretty much got the ideal.

I find it hard to believe that Jesus would say the same thing in two different passages in the same book, by the same author but  means something different. IT's not at all obvious that Jesus is expecting anyone to castrate themselves either physically, emotionally, or in anyway. Jesus came to make us whole. I don't think anyone who was listening to Jesus at the time got that idea. Can anyone name a single follower who knew Jesus personally do that?.

Of course this can become quite morbid when one reflects upon 'The City of God' -Augustine. I mean after all didn't God say to Adam and Eve: "God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." (Genesis 1:28)

Which is why the Bible can't mean thegrandverbalizer thinks that the Bible is saying.

Now it should be clear that NO WHERE is there an explicit text in the Bible that says 'There will be NO SEX' in heaven! Again your going to have to go into the warped thinking of Augustine to come up with this kind of nonsense. Even though the Creator says that the creation 'is good' these people can only see it as evil! A legacy from earlier gnostic influence rest assured.

Before we move further through thegrandverbalizer's "argument" it would make sense that he would want to prove that there is sex in heaven because many Muslims believe heaven is a place were pious men get 70 virgins

So let us look at the text that are most often used to try and conclude that there is no sex in marriage.

23That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 24“Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him.25Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. 26The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. 27Finally, the woman died. 28Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?”
29Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. 30At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. (Matthew 22:23-30)
Note the above says absolutely nothing about sex. It simply says that people will not marry and they will not be given in marriage.

In order for the argument to fly, we have to ask: "Do angels have sex?" Jesus tells us that we will be like the angels and angels do not get married. By in large, I have no problem with sex being in heaven, but if sex outside of marriage is a sin on earth, I don't know why it'll be okay in the afterlife.

Remember asking your Priest/Deacon/Pastor/Bishop how Adam and Eve were married? Remember hearing those cool little stories about how they were 'married in the sight of God'?

Alright, here comes the Nephilim.

"and sons of God see the daughters of men that they are fair, and they take to themselves women of all whom they have chosen."(Genesis 6:2 Young's Literal Translation).

"the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose."(Genesis 6:2 New International Version)

Now notice that the Young's Literal Translation basically says that the Sons of God 'took the women'. While the other translations say that the 'married' the women. So how actually did they get married? Was it in the 'sight of God' as well? If these beings 'angels' are law breakers and transgressors why get married?

Looks like someone has been reading the Book of Enoch! Easy the "sons of God" in Genesis 6:2 were not supernatural angels they were men.  Much has been written about who these "sons of God" were but  given that we see no other examples of angels taking human form  apart from doing God's business and we don't see any demons in the Bible doing it either I don't think it's plausible to think that that angles married women.  Nice try though. .

Furthermore note that it says 'SONS of God' and I already mentioned the Christian heaven is not for FEMALES! It is for men only, any woman deemed worthy enough will be turned into a SON OF GOD. Never ever a daughter of God! Note it doesn't say 'The Daughters of God' saw the sons of men were beautiful. (http://www.acommonword.net/2011/01/does-christian-heaven-have-place-for.html) < Article entitled "Does the Christian Heaven Have A Place For Women"?

And I completely disagreed with him.  http://mmcelhaney.blogspot.com/2011/01/facepalm-of-day-52-islam-and.html

Mark 12 and Luke 20 basically have the same story as the one above.

Remember in the Bible resurrected beings enjoy all kinds of sensual pleasure!

"And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have you here any meat? And they gave him a piece of broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. (Luke 24:41-43) Apparently Jesus was able to eat some tasty tidbits as the 'firstborn' of the resurrection.

Eating fish and honeycomb is not the same thing as having sex.  Of course we will be able to eat in heaven. Jews, Christians, and Muslims agree to that.

We also have this curious vision.
"On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine--the best of meats and the finest of wines." (Isaiah 25:6)

So move over Augustine looks like fine dining and great wine will be on the menu in heaven but no sex!

And what is so unbelievable about that? You can sin using food just as well as you can via sex. Sex isn't a sin.. Squandering sex is a sin - abusing the gifts God gave us.

Now even though the passages in Matthew 22, Mark 12 and Luke 20 do not explicitly say there is no sex in heaven some Christians reason that only by way of analogical deduction. They don't stop and ponder that maybe the whole idea of marriage (with it's laws and ordinances) will no longer be a necessity in heaven.

Why does thegrandverbalizer think that sex will be a necessity in heaven? Near as we can tell, no one will be born and no one will ever die.

Another passage that Christians especially those who have an Augustine slant could use is the following:

"Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads." (Revelation 14:1)

"No one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. 4. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins (parthenos). They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among mankind and offered as first fruits to God and the Lamb. (Revelation 14:3-5)

Now this text is probably the strongest AGAINST the idea of having sex in heaven. Because if the translation is rendered correct these men remained VIRGINS and they did not DEFILE themselves with women (outside of marriage or INSIDE of marriage). Now think about that for a moment especially if your a woman! Also it's quite sad that not a single woman out of all of Earth's women will be singled out to be among the privileged 144,000 that get to learn this special song!

Only if you are Jehovah's Witness would you even consider such an argument  as strong.

I guess there will be no sex in heaven after all, in fact it's kind of hard for that to happen when THERE ARE ONLY MEN IN HEAVEN.. (http://www.acommonword.net/2011/01/does-christian-heaven-have-place-for.html)....unless...wait... I better not go there!

Good news is thegrandverbalizer is wrong. http://mmcelhaney.blogspot.com/2011/01/facepalm-of-day-52-islam-and.html
