I wasn't at San Diego Comic Con 2012 last weekend (or ever), but I've been scouring the internet for news and videos to see what I missed. And I heard about the following event that we are so blessed that was it was actually recorded! Four words: Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson

Every Comic-Con ends with one of the event's most popular panels, the Starship Smackdown, in which 12 spacecraft battle it out for sole supremacy (based not on armament or shielding, but, usually, whose captain is best with the ladies). This year, it came down to--astonishingly and agonizingly--the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (1960's television series) vs. the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A refit (original motion pictures). Enjoying his first Comic-Con appearance, astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson stood to offer his cosmic perspective on which of the two very worthy vessels should win the day. The hall, and ultimately the panel of judges, agreed.

Well San Diego Comic Con 2011 is upon us. Turns out that there are quite a few people who are really not happy about the plans to reboot DC Comics continuity

More than 200 fans have pledged to attend what organizers are calling the "DC Original Protest Walk" at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Unhappy with what they've seen of DC Comics' superhero relaunch initiative, which goes into effect this September, participants intend to make their feelings known in what's presumed to be an outdoor demonstration, perhaps not dissimilar in format to what we saw last year when the Westboro Baptist Church protested the "sinful idolatry" they believed was inherent at Comic-Con.

I'm not sure but this article from Comics Alliance makes an insightful point:

Whatever you think about the practicality, dramatics or indeed madness of staging a political demonstration in response to decisions made about corporate-owned characters who do not exist, it cannot be denied that Comic-Con is the best place to do it. Although one must wonder why the protesters don't just attend the numerous DC Comics discussion panels that will be presented in the air conditioned comfort of the San Diego Convention Center, where they can put their concerns to the creators and editors directly, rather than stand outside and invite the abuse that we at ComicsAlliance will rain down upon them like a great and terrible fire from Heaven itself.

As you probably know, Comic Con 2010 is happening in San Diego even as I write this. I'm bummed that I can't go, but at least I can revel in the coverage over the event. Turns out that there is a counter protest to Fred Phelps' demonstration. I wish someone would tell Phelps that this isn't the way to witness for God. There is nothing good that can come from his actions. It makes Christians look stupid and worse makes Jesus look bad. This isn't the way to engage the culture. Thing about comic book/movie fans is that we are not docile enough to be insulted without retaliation or rebuttal. Some showed up in costume and their own signs mocking Phelps and his followers. I don't condone either side's methods but I blame those who call ourselves Christian sthe most. I mean do you really have to go out of your way to be that unloving and offensive?
