Women in Islam

I recently came across an interesting post on Tumblr where Muslim women are protesting western media and feminist demonizing Islam as being anti-women.  Take a look at the following link:

tashabilities: watanafghanistan: arzitekt: ... | K Tempest Tumbles

It become a commentary on race where the women are pointing out that white women's experiences and viewpoints should not dominate feminism. There are many Muslim people who don't do honor killings or believe that women are any less than men. For me the question is: Are the militants and terrorists - men who marry children, beat their wives and daughters, and treat women as less human than men - practicing true Islam and following the Quran or is it the westerners who live in North America and Europe - who have more egalitarian values - truly practice Islam? They both can't be right. Which is it?

No. The woman in the above picture is not living in the Muslim World. She's not under threat for her life.  But the woman below does look oppressed.

Then there are women in the west who try to toe the line and bridge the two extremes. CNN did a story on Maryam Basir who clings to her Muslim identity but makes her living as a bikini model! She does and carry on the parts of her religion she wants to do and rejects others

They interviewed a Muslim who lives in the West who says you don't have to follow or believe every word of the Quran to be a Muslim. I found that interesting because I doubt that the Taliban or Al-Quaeda or any of the leaders of Egypt, Lybia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, or Saudi Arabia would agree with him.

Answering Muslims: Saudi Arabia Executes another Woman for "Sorcery"

David Wood posted the following video from CNN. I don't condone sorcery but I don't think for a second that beheading a person for it is the way to handle it because we are not living in theocracy and I'm not willing to take the position that it's right to kill someone for something I can't prove. Reading books on sorcery does not mean that one is actually doing witchcraft or sorcery. One of the things that make this wrong is that I seriously doubt that a man would have been prosecuted or executed the same way. In theocratic Israel gender would not have mattered.

Answering Muslims: Muslim Clerics Condemn Law That Would Protect Women from Domestic Violence and Marital Rape

One of the reasons I like David Wood's blog posts is that he doesn't just say that the Quran and Hadiths say things, he actually quotes the sources and gives the references! In this case he first gives the references:

The Qur'an allows men to beat women into submission:
Qur'an 4:34--Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.
It also declares that women are the sexual property of their husbands:
Qur'an 2:223--Your wives are as a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how ye will; but do some good act for your souls beforehand; and fear God. And know that ye are to meet Him (in the Hereafter), and give (these) good tidings to those who believe.

David Wood gives the references before he posts the news article. In this case that a law in Lebanon that would have simply protected women from domestic violence was opposed by Muslim clergy.

Dar al-Fatwa also slammed as "heresy" a clause in the bill that criminalises marital rape, accusing those behind the draft law of "inventing new types of crimes."

"This will have a negative impact on Muslim children... who will see their mother threatening their father with prison, in defiance of patriarchal authority, which will in turn undermine the moral authority" of fathers, it said.

If your wife say, "Not Tonight." or "No" then a husband has no right to force her. It's sick to think otherwise. A husband's authority does not allow him to abuse his wife. We do not have that right.

Answering Muslims: Speaker's Corner: Women in Islam

Jay David Wood has posted a video of Jay Smith challenging Muslims at Speaker's Corner in London. Smith dialogues about women in Islam.

This was interesting open-air preaching and dialogue at its best. I'd like to know what is Muslim response to this. I have not heard a good response.

From: Lifting The Veil: Muslim Women Explain Their Choice by… | The Angry Black Woman

A veiled Arab woman in Bersheeba, Palestine.                         Image via WikipediaThis is real interesting. The choice in question is whether or not to wear a hijab. Living in America, I haven't seen many Muslim women wearing full burquas, but hijabs are very common. I agree with the women in the video that what one - man or woman - wears should not have a bearing on judging anyone's faithfulness or spiritual state. It doesn't make anyone more or less holy. Not saying that we don't need humility or modesty but it just doesn't sit well with me imposing a dresscode on people just because of their gender. I applauded the women in the video but it made me wonder: IF the Islamic texts and traditions say that women need to wear hijabs can you still be a Muslim. If Muhammad had said that women must do something, and he was truly saying what God says, then how can they set it aside. I don't have to set it aside the Bible because it contradicts those ideas.

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. - 1 Corinthians 11:13-16

And Jesus taught that it's not what is on your outside but what comes out of us from the inside.

25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. - Matthew 23:25-28
