Common Sense Atheism » CPBD 045: Richard Carrier – Is Christianity Responsible for Science?

Here is an interview with Richard Carrier in which he tries to explain why Christians are wrong in saying that science needed Christianity. I agree with him but I think he's over-reaching.  I haven't heard Christian scientist ever try to suggest that no science was ever done without Christianity. I wouldn't ever try to argue that. It's amazing that some atheists are more than willing to argue that the ancients were knowledgeable about a great much of science and engineering, yet when it comes to believing that they the can correctly record historical events they are inept. Carrier makes good points that the ancients did see order in the universe and studied it. The interview is interesting but I can barely hear the interviewer but you can hear Carrier very well. I disagree with much of Carrier's conclusions but we need to be careful not to assume that God does not give nonbelievers enough grace to be moral or to learn about the Universe He created.

18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.- Romans 1:18-20

Will William Lane Craig debate Richard Dawkins? | True Freethinker

Richard Dawkins is a plain coward. Mariano has posted a couple of awesome posts logically demonstrating that if Dawkins really wanted to stack his arguments against God's existence up against one of the best scholars Christianity has to offer today, he'd be hard pressed to ignore William Lane Craig. Mariano quotes Dawkins as saying:

As for William Lane Craig, Richard Dawkins has stated, “I've never heard of William Craig” and that he will not debate this stranger as “A debate with him might look good on his resume, but it wouldn't look good on mine!”

In my opinion, it's Dawkins resume would surely suffer because he would loose this debate hands down. I'd put Dawkins up against many scholars without even batting an eye, and they wouldn't either because they already know what the outcome would be. So does Dawkins, that is why he will not debate them. He can already smell his blood in the water. On the following links, Mariano lists Dr. William Lane's credentials - his educations, many of his publications, a list of some of his debate opponents - all of which add up to Dr. Craig more than being worthy to debate any subject Dawkins would like to discuss in a public, moderated debate. I think the better question is: Is Dawkins worthy to debate William Lane Craig?

Michael Shermer and Ben Witherington Discuss the Gospels | True Freethinker

Mariano has posted a couple of great  videos regarding Michael Shermer. In the first video Shermer and Dr. Ben Witherington discuss whether or not the Gospels are trustworthy. Shermer as an atheist comes up really short! Mariano does a great job explaining why Shermer is fundamentally wrong. You can read the post at the link below and i really wanted to share the graphic he posted summing up Shermer's inadequate argumentation - this time concerning whether scientists lost their jobs because of their position on Intelligent Design or not.

Truthbomb Apologetics: Audio: Is God Arrogant and Egotistical? by Paul Copan

Here is a lecture with Paul Copan on his recent book about reconciling God's character with what many people think are horrible examples of immorality in the Bible - theodicy. He is always great listen to. Thanks, Chad!

Apologetics 315: Peter S. Williams vs. Peter Cave Debate: Is Belief in God Reasonable?

Brian Auten recently published a debate about if belief in God is Reasonable. The debate is interesting to me because the arguments for and against God have not changed. The best thing about this is that Peter Williams does a great job summarizing ontological and cosmological arguments for God's existence.

French psychiatrists and psychologists diagnose Darth Vader with borderline personality disorder (BPD)

Darth Vader - a teaching aid? Yup. I think this article makes some good point.  However, Anakin's problems came between episodes 1 and 2. He seemed mental to me even before his mother was killed in episode 2? I would like to see stories explaining what happened to Anakin. How did he turn into a emo-teen? Did Obi-wan mess up in raising him? Now those would  be interesting stories.

John Bugay has written a great article discussing the various sects that spun off from Christianity and how things were different and changed. It is further suggested that Muhammad was influenced by these sects instead of Bible-based Christianity.

Answering Muslims: Thomas More Law Center Represents Four Christian Missionaries Arrested at Arab Festival in Dearborn

Here is some more news regarding the arrests of Christians at an Arab Festival:

Arrested on charges of Breach of the Peace are: Negeen Mayel, Dr. Nabeel Qureshi, Paul Rezkalla, and David Wood. Mayel, an eighteen year old female, whose parents emigrated from Afghanistan and a recent convert from Islam to Christianity, was also charged with failure to obey a police officer’s orders. She was approximately 100 feet away and videotaping a discussion with some Muslims when her camera was seized.

I'm glad that they have good legal representation . I wanna see how this plays out because it has far reaching consequences.

ghettoManga: Boondocks TOASTED Tyler Perry this episode!

I saw this great post on the ghettoManga regarding last Sunday's episode of Boondocks. I don't think they just toasted Tyler Perry, they blasted him and his work. I thought it was funny in many ways. I do not think that Perry is a homosexual, however I've got to admit that as Christians we open ourselves up to ridicule condoning cross dressing when we endorse Madea. I like Perry's work and I think that his non-Madea plays and movies are his best work. However he can't seem to get as much support without Madea. Which is sad. Many people try to look over the fact that Tyler Perry is cross dressing because he is giving good solid Christian messages and using humor to give it. The issue is so subtle. Do the end truly justify the means? I don't think so. On top of that, we bear just as much responsibility as Hollywood. I think the Hollywood execs are interested in making money regardless of the message being sent. They want Madea to continue because the character sells. I mean a lot of people went to see Madea Goes To Jail but did not go see Why Did I Get Married?

A list of over 700 inconsistencies in the Bible From www.skepticsannotatedbible.com

Many of the atheists I've spoken to on Twitter/Facebook/and blogs are using a single source for contradictions in religious books. They are using the Skeptic's Annotated Bible /Quran / Book of Mormon  website. It's a searchable and indexed site for finding "problem passages" - you know magic bullets they think they can use to substantiate their rejection of God. They tell themselves the Bible is wrong.  One of the things they make available on their site is a 45 page list claiming 700 contradictions in the Bible - organized according to the books of the Bible. They don't hold any water. I'm planning a series of posts responding to those passages that I have not discussed on this blog.

Truthbomb Apologetics: Video: Could the Universe Have Simply "Popped" into Being? with Dr. William Lane Craig

I thank Chad for posting this on his Truthbomb blog. It's a great little video. It think that this is the subject where Dr. William Lane Craig really shines other than on defending the resurrection.

Apologetics 315: William Lane Craig vs. Massimo Pigliucci Debate MP3

Brian has posted an interesting debate. I enjoyed listening to it. I really like Dr. Craig. One thing is I've got to admit is that it frustrates me that He does not debate Biblical inerrancy or that the Bible really accurately describes what happened. The atheist is going to bring it up. I understand why Craig does not go there in a deep way in that he can show that Christianity is reasonable apart from the Bible. Although I think it is effective in his hands, i think not bringing the Bible to bear is not giving the whole message. Of course he isn't trying to give the whole message, just nudge people towards God. I wonder if he thinks the Bible does have contradictions and conflicts. I'll be looking into that soon. William Lane Craig is a philosopher and historian not a theologian. Therefore I want to be careful not to read things into what he believes that is not there. Follow the link below to listen to the debate yourself.

Christians Taken Away in Handcuffs, Cameras Confiscated, While Muslims Chant "Allahu Akhbar!" on US Soil

I just could not believe this story. A group of Christians arrested merely being at a Muslim Festival in Michigan. I'm amazed. If I understand the story correctly, " David Wood, Nabeel Qureshi (Acts 17 Apologetics Ministry) and two other Christians were arrested and taken away in handcuffs by the Dearborn, MI police." Their crime seems to be being Christian in an Muslim Zone. They weren't being destructive or disruptive. They were not not trying to offend anyone and only spoke to people who wanted to talk to them. People carry video recorders and microphones to such events. I see nothing wrong with documenting what they were doing...especially in light of what ended up happening. Checkout the following links for more information.

Danielle Belton's The Black Snob - The Snob Blog - Casting Cleopatra: Angelina Jolie Is The New Go-To "Person of Color"

Danielle Belton has done a very interesting article about how Angelina Jolie has been tapped to play Cleopatra in the upcoming movie based on her life. Belton explains the fact that people disagree on how Cleopatra looked and her skin color. I with Belton that Cleopatra was not Caucasian. She had Egyptian and Greek blood in her. No way she had blond hair and blue eyes. I think it is sad that Hollywood studios don't believe an actress of  African descent can be enough of a box office draw to play Cleopatra. I predict that in 30 years they will have actors not of African descent play Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. I don't think that is a good idea. It's almost like people think the best way to solve racism is to ignore race. I think that is why we have talk of Spider-man being played by a black man or Wonder Woman being played by Beyonce'.  I think we can respect each other's racial differences without ignoring them.

Islam and Christianity A Common Word: Jesus is a Muslim: The Lords Prayer by Imam Khalid Yasin

I recently found this posted on thegrandverbalizer's blog. In the Video, Imam Khalid Yasin makes the claim that Jesus never claimed to be God and tries to make the Lord's Prayer an example of why Jesus is not God. Here is the original video.

Instead of taking the points of the video in the post, I'd thought I'd let Jame White do it. I would love to see more information about how Muslims would answer Dr. White's apologetic. I find it way more compelling than what Imam Khalid Yasin presented. I don't see how he gets all of that out the Lord's Prayer. Doesn't seem to fly.

Black SuperHero Blog: President Obama offers 'shout out' to THE 99

In case you have not heard, there is a comic book series called The 99. It's a team of young people from all over the world whose powers are based on the 99 attribute of Allah. There will be an animated series soon. President Obama recently spoke about the creator of the series in the following clip. You can read more about the 99 on my other blog: Favorite Media - the 99. There are couple of free things out and I have not seen the series yet so I won't comment much until I do.

Atheists Fulfill Scripture: “Why Won’t God Heal Amputees?” / “Why Does God Hate Amputees?” | True Freethinker

Mariano is brilliant. Here is a great article he has posted that deals with theodicy. My favorit e point he raises is extremely quotable:

Their non-sequitur is to expect, or demand, that God be as singularly interested in that which is of ultimate concern to them as are they. God must “care” about our physical bodies and heal them on demand or else God is not “love” and if God is not love then God is not—see: "Love" and "Hate" - Defining Terminology.

I know for sure that this is the wrong attitude to take of life and of God. Isn't it arrogant to presume to tell God what He ought to do and to suggest a parameters as to what form God's love should take!? I mean in any realtionship no one want to hear: "If you love me, you would..." No one likes it because we know there is now an attempt to manipulate us. Bad move. Unfortunately, it works on many of us. No way does it work on God.

Apologetics 315: Terminology Tuesday: Pantheism

In continuing his awesome series on giving the terminology of theological terms, Brian Auten posted a definition of "panthesism" last Tuesday.  God cannot be equated with the universe because God has always existed and the Universe came into existence. Further, God transcends the universe - time and space - matter and energy - and keeps it together..Therefore it cannot logically follow that you can be a Christian and a pantheist simultaneously.
