Economist Paul Krugman Endorses 'Watchmen' Alien Invasion Plan for Fiscal Recovery - ComicsAlliance | Comic book culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

For years people have wondered what would it take for people to put aside their differences and get along. Historically as well as in fiction, treaties and alliance are often forged to fight common enemies. I liked the Movie and Comic book series Watchmen but I don't really think a proposed alien invasion would unite humanity. I think some people would sell each other out and/or not lift a finger to help others. But that hasn't stopped people from imagining that it would help us get our act together.

Every Watchmen fan remembers the plot of Adrian Veidt a.k.a. Ozymandias: Save the world from the imminent threat of nuclear war by creating the even bigger threat of an alien invasion, and forcing the people of the world to unite against a greater enemy. Yesterday, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman sounded very similar to a modern-day Ozymandias during his appearance on CNN's Fareed Zakaria GPS show, where he suggested that a fake alien invasion -- and the government spending it would create -- would fix the economic slump within 18 months.

Think about World War II -- that was actually negative social product spending and yet it brought us out... If we discovered that space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive build-up to counter the space alien threat, and inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, "whoops, we made a mistake," we'd [still] be better... There was a Twilight Zone episode like this, in which scientists fake an alien threat in order to achieve world peace. Well, this time we need it to get some fiscal stimulus.

Shifting Bike Gears with Your Mind [Video]

Okay. I want one of these!

Toyota reached out to Parlee Cycles and Deeplocal to build an aero-road bike imbued with the same forward-thinking that went into the design of the Prius. Benefitting from a monocoque carbon-fiber frame, built-in smartphone dock, countless wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamic tweaks and its unprecedented mind-powered shifter, the PXP concept bike has emerged as a purpose-built machine that blends the simple with the complex to become a better and more efficient version of itself. The SDCC Files: In Memoriam – The Black Panel Pays Tribute To Dwayne McDuffie | Racialicious - the intersection of race and pop culture

Comic-Con International San Diego LogoImage via WikipediaI've been on a look out for any information on the Dwayne McDuffie tribute during the Black Panel at the San Diego Comic Con 2011 for the past few weeks! At least there was this following post describing what occurred during the event! I totally agree with the following:

Those testimonials underscored McDuffie’s legacy to both of the industries he worked in – one Cowan exhorted the audience to continue on his behalf.
Bury the man, but not the plan,” Cowan said. “The revolution goes on.”

Iron Man-Like Exoskeleton Nears Production - Technology Review

Here is an article about the Raytheon Sarcos robot exoskeleton. The article states that they are just 5 years from production. I posted a blog post about two years ago on their work. So this means that they have come pretty far in terms of progress.

Raytheon's second-generation exoskeleton (XOS 2), essentially a wearable robotics suit, was unveiled for the first time recently during an event at the company's Salt Lake City research facility. XOS 2 is lighter, stronger and faster than its predecessor, yet it uses 50 percent less power, and its new design makes it more resistant to the environment.

The wearable robotics suit is being designed to help with the many logistics challenges faced by the military both in and out of theater. Repetitive heavy lifting can lead to injuries, orthopedic injuries in particular. The XOS 2 does the lifting for its operator, reducing both strain and exertion. It also does the work faster. One operator in an exoskeleton suit can do the work of two to three soldiers. Deploying exoskeletons would allow military personnel to be reassigned to more strategic tasks. The suit is built from a combination of structures, sensors, actuators and controllers, and it is powered by high pressure hydraulics.

Representatives from Paramount Home Entertainment, including the actor Clark Gregg (aka Agent Phil Coulson of the Marvel® Movie franchise) were in attendance to capture footage of XOS 2 to include in a video that's being produced to support the release of Iron Man® 2 on DVD and Blu ray.

Does atheism lead to cult of personality hero worship? | True Freethinker

Mariano has posted a really cool article and I think he asks a very good question given what we see surrounding people like Christopher Hitchens, Dan Barker, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins. People have become so enamored with them that people don't seem to think about the things they actually say anymore. They have traded the authority they hated for being under the authority of a man. There is another word for that: "Cult".Face it people have to worship something we deem higher than ourselves. If you reject God, you will find something else.

What Really Happened at Nicea?

Here is a great article from Dr. James White that explains what happened at the Council of Nicea.  So many people erroneously conclude that the council met to set the canon - what books would be included or excluded from the Bible. This is not what the members talked about. We actually know a lot about what was discussed there and who attended. Read the article.

Faithful Thinkers: Video: Death Before Age of Accountability

Here is Dr Norman Geisler talking about the salvation of people who die before the "age of accountability". The age of accountability is the point in anyone's life that they can hear and respond to the Gospel with saving faith. It's also tied to when you are able to understand what is "right" and "wrong". Some people think that there is a chronological age that is good for everyone. I disagree, it depends on the individual. It might be 2 yrs-old. 10 or 12 years old. 18 years old. May be never if they are mentally handicapped. That's really God's business as to when we are accountable. He gives mercy to whom he wants and how he wants. The important thing is...if you are reading this then you are accountable and you know it. IF you are old enough to ask "Am I accountable?" You are accountable.

Answering Muslims: Teenage Apostate Susan Ithungu Tortured and Starved by Her Muslim Father

David Wood posted an article about a young lady, Susan Ithungu, who lives in Uganda that is still recovering from injuries she received from being tortured and starved. If that wasn't bad enough, her own father did this to her. Why? She left Islam and converted to Christianity. She is only 14 years old

In March 2010 an evangelist from Bwera Full Gospel Church spoke at Susan’s school, and she decided to trust Christ for her salvation.

“I heard the message of Christ’s great love of him dying for us to get everlasting peace, and there and then I decided to believe in Christ,” she said from her hospital bed. “After a month, news reached my father that I had converted to Christianity, and that was the beginning of my troubles with him. Our father warned us not to attend church or listen to the gospel message. He even threatened us with a sharp knife that he was ready to kill us in broad daylight in case we converted to Christianity.”

There have been many discussions on this blog about what a true Christian is and Susan is a living example In the face of profound persecution, she holds on to the faith that God gives her. She doesn't run away. She doesn't recant. She does not "put her hand to the plow and look back." She does not console her self of her inability to know Jesus by saying no one does. She does know Jesus. It's the only way to explain how she is able to endure as she has. We need to pray for people like Susan because she isn't the only one suffering because she refuses to back down from Jesus. There are many people all over the world who don't have it as cushy as we have it in the United States.

Response to William Lane Craig’s Question 225: “The ‘Slaughter’ of the Canaanites Re-visited” Part II | MandM

Matthew Flannagan posted part 2 of his response to William Lane Craig regarding the slaughter of the Canaanites. This time he discusses the ramification of 1st Samuel 15 directly. I'm still not completely sold but he and Paul Copan's point that 1st Samuel says that Saul destroyed all the Amalekites and yet there were Amalekites afterward in the text as very important supporting evidence for his view point. I will be studying this further.

MILES MORALES & ME: Why the new biracial Spider-Man matters - Comic Riffs - The Washington Post

I find that Miles Morales  - the new Spider-Man - has made profound waves and he's only appeared in one issue so far! David Betancourt has written a very passionate essay about what this change means to a life-long fan. One of my favorite quotes from the article is:
Black superheroes, of course, have made their mark on the comic book industry — including not only Black Panther but also Storm and Spawn, for example — but this is different. This is Marvel taking the mantle of their flagship character — one of the most important comic-book characters in history — and placing the characters in the hands of a kid who reflects a more accurate portrayal of the diversity of where we are in the world right now.
This is a great article, check it outl

FacePalm of the Day #118 - Bart Ehrman and the Epistle to the Laodiceans

facepalm animated gifs Pictures, Images and PhotosLast Saturday, Dr Darrell Bock  faced off with Dr Bart Ehrman on the Unbelievable? radio broadcast. They discussed Ehrman's latest book Forged in which Dr Ehrman contends that the majority of the writers of the New Testament were liars because they claimed to be people that they weren't. During the course of the discussion Ehrman said that this was a wide-spread practice by Christians and offered up the Epistle to the Laodiceans as an example of a letter that could not have been written by Paul even though it claims to be, has nothing that can be consider heretical, and was considered to be canon by many Christians over many centuries. This intrigued me. And like Dr Ehrman often does, he says some true things but neglects to tell everything that would be relevant to know.

1. There are no copies or definitive mention of the letter before the 4th century
2. There are no Greek copies of the letter - they are all Latin.
3. It doesn't contain heresy because it also contains nothing that you cannot get the canonical epistles.
4. The Wikipedia article states: " Jerome wrote in the 4th century, "it is rejected by everyone."[12]"
5. Some people think that this may be the letter referred to Colosians 4:16. I don't think so because we should be able to trace it back to the first century if it were authentic.
Here is the problem. There is no possible way knowing what we know can we say that Paul wrote this. As for the other Epistles like Ephesians, 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, and the other canonical books, it's not nearly as slam dunk as Ehrman makes it sound. The Epistle of Laodiceans is no where in their league. I mean just look at this thing and see if it's "God-breathed" or merely copied.

Translation from the Vulgate

Latin English
1. Paulus apostolus non ab hominibus neque per hominem sed per Iesum Christum, fratribus qui sunt Laodiciae. 1. Paul, an apostle, not of men or because of men, but because of Jesus Christ, to the brothers at Laodicea.
2. gratia vobis et pax a Deo Patre et Domino Iesu Christo. 2. Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. gratias ago Christo per omnem orationem meam, quod permanentes estis in eo et perseverantes in operibus eius, promissum expectantes in diem iudicii. 3. I thank Christ in my every prayer, that you are enduring in Him and persevering in His good works, looking ahead to the promise of the Day of Judgment
4. neque destituant vos quorundam vaniloquia insinuantium, ut vos evertant a veritate evangelii quod a me praedicatur. 4. Don't let the vain speech of anyone trouble you—speech that tries to lead you away from the truth of the gospel I have preached.
5. et nunc faciet Deus, ut qui sunt ex me ad profectum veritatis evangelii deservientes et facientes benignitatem operum quae salutis vitae aeternae 5. And now may God allow my people to (continue to increase in?) the truth of the Gospel and do good (for greeting?) eternal life.
6. et nunc palam sunt vincula mea quae patior in Christo; quibus laetor et gaudeo. 6. And now my bonds are seen, which I suffer in Christ, and so I rejoice and I am glad.
7. et hoc mihi est ad salutem perpetuam; quod ipsum factum orationibus vestris et administrantem Spiritum Sanctum, sive per vitam sive per mortem. 7. And this is for my eternal salvation, which comes through your prayers and the help of the Holy Spirit, by life or by death.
8. est enim mihi vere vita in Christo et mori gaudium. 8. Truly to me, to live is in Christ, and to die is a joy.
9. et in ipsum in vobis faciet misericordiam suam, ut eandem dilectionem habeatis et sitis unianimes. 9. And he will work his mercy in you, so that you will have the same love and be of one mind.
10. ergo, dilectissimi, ut audistis praesentia mei, ita retinete et facite in timore Dei, et erit vobis vita in aeternum; 10. So, beloved, as you have heard in my presence, so hold fast and work in the fear of God, and eternal life will be yours.
11. est enim Deus qui operatur in vos. 11. Since it is God that works in you,
12. et facite sine retractu quaecumque facitis. 12. do whatever you do without inhibition.
13. et quod est, dilectissimi, gaudete in Christo. et praecavete sordidos in lucro. 13. and (as it is?), beloved, rejoice in Christ, and avoid those dirtied with wealth.
14. omnes sint petitiones vestrae palam apud Deum. et estote firmi in sensu Christi. 14. Let all your petitions be (made?) before God, and be steadfast in the (way?) of Christ.
15. et quae integra et vera et pudica et iusta et amabilia facite. 15. And what is sound and true and sensible and just and lovable, do these things.
16. et quae audistis et accepistis, in corde retinete, et erit vobis pax. 16. And what you have heard and accepted, hold it in your heart, peace will be yours.
17. salutate omnes fratres in osculo sancto. 17. Salute all the brothers with a holy kiss.
18. salutant vos sancti. 18. The saints salute you.
19. gratia Domini Iesu cum spiritu vestro. 19. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with your spirit.
20. et facite legi Colosensium vobis. 20. And let this be read to the Colossians.

Petition Asks Bert And Ernie To Get Married On Sesame Street

I realize that a discussion of diversity in the media has been really in the news lately. I'm not surprised that such a petition has been brought up to get Bert and Ernie married to one another. But I still have to ask why? Can't two people be room mates in real-life and be friends and completely non-amorous? Why not? What message does it send if we say they can't - just to add depiction of a lifestyle on Sesame Street? I don't see how it could be a positive message at all. Sesame Street has already confirmed that the characters are not gay, why change it now?
